5 stars are not enough!,
By Blues & Jazz fan (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Playing Funky Rhythm Guitar (Paperback)
As someone who has bought more guitar books than I'd care to admit (given my still limited ability!), I can recognise exceptional quality in an instructional book when I see (and hear) it. Chris Hunt has produced the best rhythm guitar book I have ever encountered. It has 55 examples which are usually 2-4 bars long (a few are longer) and 8 play-along tracks with just bass & drums for extended practice. Without a doubt, every lesson is a minor gem. The rhythms and chord voicings presented here are things you have heard on hundreds of classic R&B tracks, but I think any guitarist of any style can benefit from the wisdom that is distilled in these pages. The quality of production, execution and knowledge that Chris has shared is as good as it gets. It will save me a lot of money that I would have given to a teacher to learn all that is contained here. It deserves to become THE benchmark rhythm guitar text and a best seller that every guitarist should own.

Original Idea, Well-Written Book,
By Saint Louis Lou (Missouri) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Playing Funky Rhythm Guitar (Paperback)
This is not a method book but one that falls into the licks and patterns category. The author has created an original idea and a well-written book.
The examples are bite-size and fun to work through. And they have an honest-to-goodness R&B or funk sound, too. Not just dull exercises, but the real thing like you hear on recordings. There is a good amount of material here for the price and a good number of the patterns are good technique builders. I have enjoyed this book and recommend it to others.

Don't let the title fool you into thinking this is a specialty book for funk or even for just rhythm. There is an emphasis on funk, but the examples/exercises are excellent technique builders across genres. Also, since the rhythms are often complex, they can be judiciously incorporated into solos (a la Hendrix). This book would be frustrating for most beginners, but for anyone who wants to break out of basic 4/4 strumming and make their rhythm playing count (sorry for the pun), this will be a great investment.

I like Chris Hunt's books. This book has lots of good rhythm patterns, some funky, some not really so funky but useful nonetheless.
