Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3–A young boy is going to Mexico to visit his grandmother, and he is concerned. After all, she speaks very little English, and his Spanish is vestigial. His mother assures him that all will be well and that he will come home speaking Spanish. His insecurities begin to vanish when he discovers his grandmother's job. She is a canta in a lotería booth, a game similar to Bingo. However, in place of numbers, there are cards with pictures on them, matching the pictures on the board. His grandmother calls out a rhyme that corresponds to each picture, and the boy is caught. He wants to know those rhymes. His grandmother is only too happy to teach him, but only if he will teach her English. There are a few rough spots along the way, but by the time his mother shows up to fetch him, the young hero is... the best caller in San Luis! This is a warm and reassuring story of a boy's involvement not only with his family but also his culture. The prose flows easily in both English and Spanish. Arena's spirited primitive acrylics are reminiscent of Anita de Lucio-Brock's art for Juan Felipe Herrera's Grandma and Me at the Flea/Los meros meros remateros (Children's Book Press, 2002) in color and sense of place.

More About the Author

Hi! I am Rene Colato Lainez, and I write bilingual picture books for children. I am also a bilingual teacher at Fernangeles Elementary.Come on in and celebrate the pleasure of reading in English and Spanish. My goal as a writer is to produce good multicultural children's literature; stories where minority children are portrayed in a positive way, where they can see themselves as heroes, and where they can dream and have hopes for the future. I want to write authentic stories of Latin American children living in the States.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mexican Bingo February 14, 2008
This is a bilingual book about the old game of loteria, which is similar to bingo and played widely in Mexican culture. The story is about a young boy who is (rather abruptly in the opening sentence) shipped off to stay with his Spanish speaking grandmother. He does not speak very much Spanish, how will they communicate? Ahhh, the magic of the cards, loteria! The story is told in the first person so we never learn the little boy's name. Abuelita(grandmother)meets him at the bus station and his foreign language adventure begins. They immediately go to a fair, listen to mariachi music and in general take in the smells, sights and sounds of the colorful festivites , which are detailed quite nicely. Abuelita owns a loteria stand and the little boy is explained the rules as the crowd gathers around to play. The children play the game and the little boy learns about loteria and his grandma. Later, once at home, through the cards, they both begin to learn each others language(English and Spanish) through the cards images and charades. The boy learns enough to eventually call the card game at abuelita's loteria stand. He eventually has to go home to return to school but not before the little boy has learned to speak Spanish better. The book is nicely illustrated throughout with full page colorful, dynamic drawings. There are also pictures drawn of the loteria cards and a section that explains the simple rules of the game. This book is a great teaching tool. It may be used in a variety of ways for a classroom of bilingual students. Recommended for K-8 school and community libraries.

Rene Colato Lainez has become one my students' favorite authors. Kids love that they can relate to his stories. I have even had several parents request to borrow my Lainez books that my students keep raving about! =)
