In 1988 Wartman ( Life Without Father ) followed the Professional Golfers' Association tour through every step. He here presents a lively account of that adventure, focusing on "player of the year" Curtis Strange, who evidently fought an uphill battle against his hot temper, and Aussie Greg Norman, depicted as a charismatic showman always ready to play to his fans. Also felt on the tour was the presence of Jack Nicklaus, who served as a TV sports commentator, and--not surprising in a player decreed "golfer of the century"--is portrayed as possessing monumental ego and furious competitive drive as an athlete. Likewise, we hear much of Deane Beman, autocratic commissioner of the game. Wartman's cast includes many others, from former president turned professional-amateur contender Gerald Ford ("a man with a history of bruising spectators with misdirected golf balls") to frantic officials hosting the tour and bent on keeping its public image squeaky-clean. Wartman's keen sense of the shenanigans surrounding this tour makes his tale arresting and fun. Photos not seen by PW.

Wartman zeroes in largely on the year 1988 to peek behind the scenes of the Professional Golf Association (PGA) tour. He opens with a broad salvo at the 1988 Masters tournament with cameo anecdotes on players Curtis Strange, Greg Norman, and others. Wartman's choice of mediocre tournaments, such as the Hilton and Westchester classics, is difficult to understand. Overall, the book is rather dull. Despite the subtitle, there simply does not seem to be enough "behind the scenes." Wartman dwells mostly on Strange and Norman, with Jack Nicklaus and even Arnold Palmer thrown in, along with long-retired Ben Hogan and Sam Snead, who don't even play on the Senior Tour. The constant shift between Norman and Strange is confusing, as is the fabricated-sounding dialog. Not recommended.
