More About the Author

In the month of February 1982 I wrote and sold my first novel. And no, I wouldn't believe it either if it hadn't happened to me. I sent in my manuscript on Thursday February 21, 1982 and four days later the telephone rang and I heard the amazing words, "We want to buy your book." How I wish you could have seen me. I was standing by the kitchen door of our North Babylon house, the picture of cool sophistication, as I listened to Vivian Stephens explain the terms of the deal to me. You would have thought I'd sold a first book every single day of my life. Yes, I said. Sounds wonderful. Thank you so much for calling. I look forward to our association. That cool sophistication hung on until I hung up the phone, took a deep breath, then promptly threw up on my shoes.

I was thirty-one years old, unagented, unschooled, unfamiliar with anything to do with the business of publishing. To put it mildly, I was in shock. My husband was working in Manhattan at the time (and finishing up his degree at night) so it would be hours until I could break the news to him. This was too exciting to waste on a phone call. I wanted to see his face when I told him that my dream had finally come true -- and came with a $6000 advance!

He pulled into the driveway at midnight. I was waiting in the doorway, holding a bottle of champagne and two glasses. I didn't have to say a word. He knew right away and the look of joy and pride in his eyes warms me now, years later, long after the advance faded into memory.

I really didn't like this story at all. It was so shallow and implausible, not to mention boring. The romance was hardly there, and then all of a sudden, right after the heroine nearly gets raped, they have sex. That's too swift of a mood change in the book. The characters were not interesting or strong, or easy to relate to. The writing was bad, too wordy, and some sentences were grammatically incorrect. When I started skipping pages in my Kindle I knew it was time to give it up and not even bother finishing.

Things aren't always as they seem... so we find out when we look inside the pages of Playing For Time. The good looking rich guy is a secret agent and the little old lady is a make up artist in her 30's! When they meet the chemistry is wonderful. even though it seems they are worlds apart. I am a new and already devoted fan to Babara Bretton's writing, as this is my third of her many books. I was a little disappointed that the story didn't wrap up in a neat little package at the end... it is continued! I should have paid more attention to the word "series". But even if this is the only book you read you wouldn't be truly disappointed, as it is a great story and the characters hold your interest and keep you wanting more.

I enjoyed the book. It may not be a five star book but it's good. However I had expected more somehow esp as it relates to the heightened moment in the book when Joanna was held hostage. Plus recovery was to quick. I wanted to feel the anguish she felt knowing that she almost lost the love of her life because he tried to save her life. Still I enjoyed it.

Joanna and Riley were the two main characters in this story. They each had interesting jobs/skills that could be used in future stories. I wish, however, that the author would have shown more of the chemistry between them. A few more touches and looks in passing that they felt the pull. More heated banter that showed these two were crazy about each other. I cared some about them getting together, but not enough.

Ejoyable plot and easy read. Tiresome protrayal of the hard-musceled, hard-bodied hard-headed male lead and the sweet, innocent female lead.

I enjoyed the way things were put together. The suspense at the end was worth reading the entire book no matter.

Story line is good and holds your interest. I don't consider this a real book. It is more of a short story. Lots of misspelled words and that makes your lose the flow of the story. I know I got the book for cheap but I would pay more for the same book that was 350+ pages . It seems the author takes the length to build characters and a plot then poof it is over and you are left with 60% of the book gone and the next 40% trying to sell you more short stories , which I did not read so for me it was a waste of time . Will not be buying any more from this author.

Slow start but better as you get into the book. Going to read Pax #2 preview of this book sounds good.
