A guilty pleasure......,
This review is from: Playlist:The Very Best of Rick Astley (Eco-Friendly Packaging) (Audio CD)
This CD is awesome. I got it for Valentines Day, and I have to say I am shocked how much I like it. I didnt remember all the hits Rick had back in the 80's. I dont know how you can listen to the first track and not smile, or at least move a little.

Interesting new product, with liner notes, photos, discography, etc on the audio disc in enhanced format for PC.
Every song here appears in the version released as a single. This is a trimmed-down version of his excellent Greatest Hits CD.

Not One Hit Wonder! Really a Deeper Singer!,
This review is from: Playlist:The Very Best of Rick Astley (Eco-Friendly Packaging) (Audio CD)
Rick Astley should have been a one hit wonder with silly songs like "Never Gonna Give You Up," "Together Forever," "Don't Say Goodbye," or "It Takes a Strong, Strong Man but he didn't. He surfaced with a deep elegant song like "Hopelessly," as well as some others. Another ballad is "Hold Me In Your Arms." Perhaps "Cry for Help," is the best single but "Hopelessly" comes pretty close.
I grew up in the eighties and I think so did Rick Astley. It's nice to see that he's resurfaced even for a moment. His videos and music style was both light-hearted but he could really belt out deep songs about relationships as well.

Ah yes, the 80's! "Never gonna give you up" should have been a one hit wonder (with "together forever" as a B-side). The rest of this disk ranges from unintentionally funny to unintentionally un-funny and pretty much all bad.
I did find it entertaining to go back and listen and a few things really stood out: - synthesizers, while originally intended to sound like other instruments, can be made to sound like a tiny Casio keyboard. I'm not sure any other instruments were used. - a cheesy 'fill' or 'riff' sounds even cheesier (more cheesier in fact) on aforementioned cheese machine. If fact I think they were already programed on Casio. - He may or may not have had a good voice but there's so much reverb It sounds like Karaoke sometimes. |
