Editorial Reviews

Welcome to the Playlist series. Painstakingly compiled by the artists and the music nuts at Legacy Recordings, these collections truly represent an artists' complete body of work. We've fished through hundreds-thousands-of tracks to cherry pick the perfect playlists. Not just the hits (anyone can find those). The life changing cuts. The out-of-print tracks. The fan favorites everyone loves. The songs that make the artist who they are.

You’ll no doubt enjoy the sound of the beautifully remastered songs on this CD (as opposed to MP3's that contain less information, which translate into compromised sound). But we think the thing you'll appreciate most about this Playlist is that even though you didn't make it, you might wish you did.

This is an interesting compilation but hardly "The Very Best Of Bruce Hornsby" as the cd title indicates. There are many key hits missing here. Great songs like: "Every Little Kiss", "Look Out Any Window", "Across the River", "Harbor Lights", "Fields of Gray", "Walk in the Sun", "The Great Divide" & "Set Me in Motion" from the Backdraft soundtrack are all noticably absent. And that's just the tip of the iceberg as far as Hornsby's greatest songs go. There are dozens more that could be here as well but they either weren't singles or were but just weren't as well known as the aforementioned songs. This compilation is more like a mini box set in that it mixes a few well known hits with songs that no one but the hardcore fan would even know about. In that regard, this is a good collection but if you just want to hear Hornsby's radio hits, you'd be much better off with Hornsby's "Greatest Radio Hits" cd which is for the most part, a complete collection of his hits.

This is a great listening cd, with a variety of music - some slow and soulful, and some upbeat. The piano sounds are the best! A talented artist and a great compilaton.

With many other artists in Sony/BMG's 'Playlist: The Very Best Of' series, they've included single mixes that had previously never been released on CD before. So I was hoping they would do the same for Bruce Hornsby & the Range, like for the single mixes of 'Every Little Kiss' and 'Look Out Any Window': the single mixes were not only the versions played on the radio but also used for the music videos (and obviously included on the 45s) - so it's a shame we music fans still can't buy - on this CD or ANY CD - the famous versions we heard on the radio, watched/heard on MTV or bought on 45. These 2 hits in particular weren't even included on this 'Playlist' CD in ANY version. Also, 'Mandolin Rain' had a single mix different than the album - this song is on the 'Playlist' CD but is an alternate version that includes Ricky Skaggs. Sony/BMG had a great opportunity to finally get the single versions on a Hornsby compilation [Sony/BMG didn't put the hit versions on his last compilation either - 'Greatest Radio Hits'!], and once again Sony/BMG did a disappointing job. If any Sony/BMG employee (or a fan/person who may be working on the next Bruce Hornsby compilation CD 5 or 10 years from now) reads this, please include the famous single mixes of 'Every Little Kiss', 'Mandolin Rain' and 'Look Out Any Window' on the next Bruce Hornsby CD. Also, 'Across The River' (a top 20 hit) and 'Walk in the Sun' (a top 50 hit) were left off of 'Playlist'. On the plus side, it's nice to have a version of Bruce's 'End of the Innocence', which he co-wrote with Don Henley (who had the hit with the song), so it's nice to hear Bruce's interpretation, in a live setting no less.Read more ›

The music on the CD is great and the quality of the sound is excellent. It is a terrific buy. The only thing I don't like is that the CD comes in a cardboard case and not a plastic one. So there isn't any spine and therefore no label to identify the album when it is on the shelf. I bought a plastic case, but the cardboard cover is too thick to fit in the case.

I like "The Way It Is" but the rest of the songs leave me flat. I only knew of The Way It Is and assumed that the rest of the cuts would be good. Unfortunately I was unimpressed with the others.

Great CD. Well produced and clear sounding. It is being played a lot with no reduction in quality. Will buy from company again.

Some great songs and work on here, but probably could be reduced by 3 or 4 songs. I really wanted to rate it a 3 1/2.

Playlist featuring Bruce Hornsby is a must own for fans. It has old tunes "Valley Road," and "Thats Just Way It IS." Also a selection of well thought out tunes such as "The Dreaded Spoon," and "Sad Moon," follow. I love this collection it has Bruce's best on it.
