5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely collection, with a few surprises February 1, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Melissa Manchester is a fantastic artist whose catalogue has largely been ignored for the past couple of decades. "Hits" collections seem to be about the best we can expect from the big record companies, and most of the collections are pretty generic.

With PLAYLIST, we have a collection that ends up being different from previous compilations. Not labeled "Greatest Hits," it is indeed missing some of Ms. Manchester's bigger chart successes ("Just You and I" and "Fire In the Morning" being two that come to mind). What this compilation presents is a fairly wide-spanning career overview, nicely covering her earlier career on Arista while also including a number of post-Arista releases.

Of particular interest to Melissa Manchester fans will be the "rarities" included here, one of which is previously unreleased in any form. "A Mother and Father's Prayer" is a song that originally appeared on a Collin Raye album in 2000 (and this is the duet version, not the more obscure solo studio or live versions). From the recent (2010) movie soundtrack to DIRTY GIRL is the song "Rainbird," a stunning new song co-written with actress Mary Steenburgen (who appears in the movie). Closing out the album is a new live recording, recorded in 2011, of a song titled "I Know Who I Am."

The sound quality of all tracks is excellent here; the earlier material sound like the remasters done in the '90s for the Japanese CD releases (as opposed to the awful-sounding Wounded Bird releases a decade later).

The only real negative comment I have as about the downloadability of the tracks -- the only previously unreleased track can only be downloaded if you purchase the entire album. You can't buy the live track by itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Career Retrospect February 2, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
While there are many positives in this new CD compilation of the Very Best of Melissa, it did miss a few important gems. When I first saw the track listing for this collection, it was said to include Theme From The Promise (I'll Never Say Goodbye) and Theme From Out Of Africa (The Music Of Goodbye) with Al Jarreau. It would be the first time on CD for The Promise theme, which was nominated for an Oscar and she made history by being the first artist nominated and sang two of the songs in the same year. The other one Theme From Ice Castles (Through The Eyes Of Love) is here in it's long version, not the rare 45 single version.

Her 3 top 10 hits are here as is her own standard Come In From The Rain (original version from 1976). There are 3 newer compositions A Mother & Father's Prayer duet with Colin Raye, a live version of I Know Who I Am (from Colored Girls) and Rainbird (from Dirty Girl)

While it was great that included is Shine Like You Should and her last top 10 AC hit Walk On By, I would have prefered a studio version of Be My Baby, Barbra Striesand's wedding song Melissa wrote Just One Lifetime, or one of the Manilow duet versions of You've Got A Friend. What makes this CD worth buying is for the quality of the recordings are better than the past issues. There are also rare pictures and comentary that are interesting. So 14 tracks for under $10 is very worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Some rarities among the familiar December 28, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have about every released recording from Ms Manchester - or I thought I did - until I saw this anthology. It's not a greatest hits, per se, as many familiar recordings are absent. But it does include some rare gems and one or two tracks not available elsewhere. It's a very worthy document of some of Ms Manchester's best works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always a pleasure October 9, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Having been a fan of Melissa Manchester for decades, I always look forward to any new release of her music. I was curious as to what compilation this playlist would include. I wasn't surprised to find "Midnight Blue", "Don't Cry Out Loud", "Come In From the Rain". Interesting was adding the duet with her bass player, Cooker LoPresti on "I Can't Get Started" from the "Bright Eyes" album and picking the duet version of "A Mother's Prayer" with Collin Raye rather than her solo. Although with Collin Raye, it is beautifully done. I was very glad to hear two new songs which continues to prove Melissa Manchester's gift, skill and talent as one of the finest singers and songwriters around. No matter the song or the lyric, the voice is still the very best.

4.0 out of 5 stars How She Talks July 2, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Melissa Manchester is an artist who has always peaked my interest. I loved her When I Look Down That Road CD and wanted a disc to take me back to the days when she ruled the airwaves. "You Should Hear How She Talks About You" bangs out with a great 80s verve and a punchy beat. Her collaboration with Peabo Bryson, "Lovers After All," is a smooth silky soul track that melts in your ears. "Walk On By" is such a classic song from Burt Bacharach's pen. I loved the version by Laura Nyro on her last CD before her death, Angel in the Dark. Melissa's version builds dramatically before the fade, graceful and moving. While not her biggest hit, "Don't Cry Out Loud" marries an excellent melody & lyric to Melissa's expressive vocals. Most striking on the set is "A Mother & Father's Prayer." The song appeared as "A Mother's Prayer" on "When I Look Down That Road." The set ends with a stunning live version of "I Know Who I Am." "Playlist" is a strong review of a great career. Enjoy!
