Biography

Between 1965 and 1968, the Byrds played a key role in the development of folk-rock and country-rock, and trademark songs "Mr Tambourine Man" and "Turn! Turn! Turn!" became synonymous with the 60s hippy movement.

Forming in Los Angeles in 1964, because guitarist Roger McGuinn wanted to mix the sounds of the Beatles and Bob Dylan, their 1965 cover of Dylan's "Mr Tambourine Man" featured a hugely… Read more in Amazon's The Byrds Store

Editorial Reviews

Welcome to the Playlist series. Painstakingly compiled by the artists and the music nuts at Legacy Recordings, these collections truly represent an artists' complete body of work. We've fished through hundreds-thousands-of tracks to cherry pick the perfect playlists. Not just the hits (anyone can find those). The life changing cuts. The out-of-print tracks. The fan favorites everyone loves. The songs that make the artist who they are.

You’ll no doubt enjoy the sound of the beautifully remastered songs on this CD (as opposed to MP3's that contain less information, which translate into compromised sound). But we think the thing you'll appreciate most about this Playlist is that even though you didn't make it, you might wish you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like the Byrds? Buy this..., March 22, 2009

I've read some verbose reviews of some Byrds albums that miss the mark. If you really like the Byrds and want their best, this is the best single example of their studio work.

2.0 out of 5 stars Utterly pointless, February 20, 2009

What was Sony thinking when it put this out?

There have been so many Byrds anthologies released in the past that are better collections with more bang for the buck. This one is a shameless and second-rate ploy to milk a few more buck for Byrds completists. I gave it two stars because it has some great music on it along with some truly odd choices, songs that seem to have been selected by a randomizer rather than on artistic merit. People new to the Byrds should look to the expanded version of the Greatest Hits collection if they don't want to spring for the superior 2-disc Essentials set.
