The zebrahead i know and love...,
By xTragedyxBrittanyx "LiLBrit'" (Echo Park, Ca) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Playmate Of The Year (Audio CD)
Okay, so about three months ago I heard "rescue me" from "mfzb" on the radio and fell in love with this band. I quickly ran out (about 2 days later) and got all three of their CD's. First I listened to "waste of mind". To make a long story short, I only liked one song (someday), and hated the rest. It didn't sound like the same band I had heard. The songs were boring, not catchy. The bridges were dumb, the lyrics weren't varied and the rapping was WAY TOO constant. I sold it back 2 days later.
Then I listened to Mfzb. To this day, its my favorite zh album, and a top 10 in my collection. Finally, I got around to "playmate of the year". I was really expecting it to be as bad as "waste of Mind", but I actually really got into it. For one thing, it's alot more pop-punk based than "waste of Mind", giving it a more energetic and catchy sound. For another, there's alot more singing and the rapping serves as an accent rather than a main staple. IMO, these guys were trying to cross over into the pop mainstream, and in doing so, made one of their best decisions ever. Except for maybe one bad song, this is a really solid power-pop album. I still think Mfzb is a million times better, but for what it's worth, Playmate was probably one of the better pop-punk albums released in 2000. I am...Solid, really catchy 8/10 Playmate of the year...Great guitar work and melody, good singing 9/10 Now or never...Very energetic, favorite on the album 10/10 Wasted...Good song 8/10 I'm money...Funny lyrics 7/10 Go...Awesome chorus 8/10 What's goin on...The serious song, great melody and well sung verses 9/10 Subtract you...Another song with a great chorus 8/10 The hell the is my life...Awesome, really catchy and energetic 9/10 E generation...A little bit different, but okay 6/10 Livin libido loco...I don't understand why they had to kill the album with this one 0/10 In my room...Okay closer, but the better songs were earlier 7/10 So like i said, one bad song, the rest are above average. I'd highly recommend MFZB first, but after that, if you still got some cash to burn, pick up this one too.

Awesome CD,
By Sir Dubby "(raddest guy ever)" (Flint, MI, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Playmate Of The Year (Audio CD)
This CD starts out awesome. "I am"....an awesome catchy song. "Playmate of the Year"...a catchy song that is awesome. "Now or Never"....has to be my second favorite...nice track to put at this part of the CD. "Wasted"...nice lyrics. "I'm money"....i love this song...it's so awesome. "Go"...not my favorite...and the beginning of the song isn't that great, but it gets better around the chorus. "What's goin' on?"....my favorite song on this CD...the lyrics are awesome and for a slower song it's pretty rad. "Subtract You"....fits well where placed on this CD....awesome song and lyrics. "Hell that is my life"....i like the lyrics and the guitar in this song...and it's very catchy. "E Generation"....weird...way different from the rest of the stuff on this CD...but still awesome..and the lyrics are nice. "Livin Libido Loco"...they could have left this song off the CD...this song is what makes me rate it a 4 instead of a 5. "In My Room"...awesome lyrics...chorus is awesome....perfect song for ending the CD.

A Guy's CD,
By As Usual "Black Punk" (dallas, tx) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Playmate Of The Year (Audio CD)
Pop-punk can be great if done correctly. Sometimes, I'm feeling a little too silly to wanna "Rise Above" or have a "Nervous Breakdown." This is why I love this cd. Next to Blink, this is probably the best pop-punk band. I can't explain what sets this apart form the others. For one there is rapping. Honestly, his rap skills aren't that great, but that's easy to overlook. These guys know how to write hooks. "Wasted" is my favorite track. As much as this song celebrates getting drunk and having drunk fun, it's got a rather sad, alcoholic undertone. "Playmate Of The Year" refers to um, a certain magazine that men love. To make a long story short, if you're looking for fun, party cd, this is it.

Another Catchy Album by Zebrahead,
By M. Sturm "Judge of all things cool" (DePere, WI) - See all my reviews

I was so glad to see Zebrahead stuck with pretty much the same formula that made Waste of Mind such a great disc. I've read some reviews that say they have changed to a more punk sound. I disagree. They sound almost the same as on their first disc. It's a fun CD to listen to, and it's one you can stick in your player and listen to from start to finish. There was only one track onthis disc that I didn't absolutely love, and that was Livin' Libido Loco. All the rest are great, fun songs. Superb disc. I hope they keep it up.

Stands out in a Crowd,

While I do have reservations about giving out 5's, after listening to Playmate of the Year six times in a row and loving every time it went back to "I am", I realized Zebrahead has something special going on here. I'd give it a 4.5. A fan since Waste of Mind rocked my world, not only does ZH put on an amazing live show (especially when they steal the show from a headlining act like they did in DC) and put that into their studio work, but have a great deal of musical talent in a variety of diverse ways: from the hiphop-cum-pop-punk feel of Ali and Justin's dual vocals to the powerful and playful beats to the raging rhythm chords and surf-punk lead guitar riffs, Zebrahead is the most unique and exciting band out there (can we even put them in a genre?), and they mix it up on every song on P.O.T.Y. From the driving and danceable songs bookending the album to the soulful and powerfully socially-conscious "What's goin' on?" to the latin-inspired "Livin Libido Loco" Zebrahead has a formula for playing great songs and having fun that translates to a veritable musical journey. While P.O.T.Y. does betray a bit of the hi-fi polish that comes with big-label production, ZH maintains the passion and drive of their shows. With the thousands of generic pop-punk-emo, boy-band, and alt-rock songs out there in the post Third Wave era, ZH's second major US LP is an upbeat gem, shying away from the trend of complaining and being sad all the time. Hey,I'm now listening to it for the eighth time straight, so there you go! Hook up this album and you won't have to buy another CD for a while. Even though I only give 5's to albums like Bob's "Legend", Zepp's "4", or "Survival of the Fattest", "Playmate of the Year" is pretty close.

How Could You Not Love This???,

I love this band! No matter what mood you're in, you'll be dancing around the room as soon as you pop in ZH's new CD. With the same awesome guitar that made "Waste Of Mind" a hit, and more vocals from Ali (listen to 'The Hell That Is My Life'), this album is pure caffeine. And once again, they've managed to throw in different styles to mix it up. 'Livin' Libido Loco' is almost as addicting as the title track and 'Wasted', with it's sultry latino vibe. Of course this album isn't exactly the same as "Waste Of Mind" or "The Yellow", but with each album, the band is gaining more fans and having more fun. If you ever have the chance to see these guys live, TAKE IT! Just watch out for Justin's stagediving. He landed on my head at the ZH/Wheatus show last month.

Zebrahead Rules!!,

The new cd is off the hook, just as there last one was. They haven't lost anything, everything just got better. The cd has very good guitar rifts combined with the voices of Justin and Ali. The cd is a must, once you put it in your cd player, it won't come out for a long time. Not only should you buy the cd, you should go to there concert when they come back to town with 311!!!
