3.0 out of 5 stars Assembly Required, December 5, 2006
By
This review is from: Playmobil Advent Calendar - Unicorn Paradise (Toy)
In past years, I've ordered the Lego Advent Calendar for my kids. They've always loved them, and at the end of the Christmas season, the lego pieces just get combined with all of their other legos. This year, I decided to try Playmobil, since I knew my daughter would love the unicorns and princesses. I also bought the Knight's Kingdom set for my son.

I expected that this calendar would be very similar to Lego. Lego has perforated lines in the box for each day of December. You push the perforated lines in and pull out a little bag of pieces to assemble. However, the Playmobil set was not at all like Lego. In the box, you have one large cardboard 'calendar' with a hole, to hang it on the wall. Then you have 2-3 other cardboard pieces that you have to assemble into a sort of stage. Then you have to unfold and assemble all 25 boxes. You fit each of the boxes onto a tab on the cardboard backdrop. The numbers aren't in order, so you have to search for the corresponding tab. Then you have to follow a diagram for each day of the month, and put the corresponding pieces into the boxes. The pieces for each day are not grouped together. There are 4-5 large bags, and one piece may be in one bag, and another piece in another bag. I found the best solution was to just empty out all the bags of tiny pieces and spread them out on the floor.

Assembly took me and my husband about one hour per kit. We'll definitely be going back to the Lego kits next year, even though the kids like these just fine. But with all of the other 'assembly required' items at Christmas, I don't think we need another one. But if your kids really like unicorns and knights, and you don't mind the assembly, it's cute and may be worth it for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughters love it, December 13, 2006

As with all Playmobil Advent calendars this one requires adult only assembly (no peeking by kids). This particular set took more time than the other Playmobil advent calendars we've had, there were lots of teeny flowers to attach to small bits of greenery that then attached to larger greenery sections. Plan on at least 45 minutes for this set vs 25 or so for a normal Playmobil advent calendar. My daughters are thrilled with the girly novelty factor of this set.

My daughter loves this advent calendar and can't wait to open a box every day. I agree with the other reviewer that it took some time to assemble (1 hour), but it's so worth it. I chose this one over the other ones at Anderson's Bookshop because it had a "girly" quality and she's so into unicorns and princesses. A great way to count down until Christmas!
