2.0 out of 5 stars Five Star Freemium, Popped as Paid April 24, 2014
Verified Purchase
Ugh, I really wanted to give TAP THE FROG a 5 star, glowing review. It has the goods, it really does, but heavy IAP at every turn (three routes to the same purchase screen on one menu is kinda overkill) and FB/Twitter link bribes (I really dislike social media bribes) just flatten this otherwise great game.

The music alone made me laugh out loud, extremely reminiscent of a certain 60s noir, "Ya, tapping the frog is my bag, baby!" Fun, light hearted theme, minimal network permission, crisp, vibrant graphics, very responsive touch controls, a huge variety of simple tap to far more complex game styles, kid-appropriate action, all the makings of a stellar production.

Except the IAP and social media presence really is overbearing for a paid game, especially with IAPs as much and more than the price of the game itself. If this was always a free game, 5 stars with the kid caveat of disabling purchases. As a paid game that relies a bit too heavy on extra time clocks for full star completions... sorry, Frogger, going to have to throw you under the bus.

*And double ugh. I was looking closer at the IAPs since much older reviews imply that the whole IAP extra clock aspect is a recent addition. I found two different IAP packages off to the edge that offer to SELL Full Game unlocks and DISABLE in-game advertising. What!? Then what are folks paying the .99 cents for? Entry Fee to the Carnival of Greed? Dudes, super uncool. I accept this sort of pile-on tactic without much twitching in Gameloft's freemium games, but this one is starting to feel too froggy for comfort.*

3.0 out of 5 stars Cons outweight the Pros heavily April 24, 2014
Verified Purchase
Pros:

- Attractive game for young players
- Runs smoothly on Kindle Fire 8.9
- playable off-line
- FAOTD is possibly the only reason people will get this game

Cons:

- repetitive game play
- constant in-app purchasing (IAP) options
- Facebook/Twitter links for little reward
- fails to utilize Facebook as a means to permit competition between friends
- Paid for application contains in-app purchasing (when not the FAOTD)
- purchased items can be used up exceptionally quickly
- Game Circle add-on (why do developers even include this garbage?)
- Levels (even the first level) are designed to keep players from earning 100% stars without using up IAP items

ATTENTION PARENTS! - Please be fully aware that disabling the ability to make IAPs is my recommendation if you turn your phone/tablet over to your child. I know this ability is possible on the Kindle Fire HD and I honestly hope it is also available to you. The addictive nature of this game is unlikely to exceed the teenager market, so I suspect that is Playmous' targeted audience and consumer. Unfortunately we, as the parents are the one's stuck with the bill at the end of the month.

This is unlikely to be a keeper for most FAOTD hunters. A time killer for a few hours easily, beyond that, I suspect it will be forgotten by the weekend.

This game contains cute graphics and music and in my opinion is targeted at children. Unfortunately this app contains InApp purchases and Flurry Analytics. After playing for a few minutes I was already offered to purchase a key to unlock other levels or to buy three stars for $.99. In the classic style of InApp purchase games they make playing and beating the levels just hard enough to not let you score highly and then try to get you to purchase items with real money.

In the lower RH corner is the store icon that shows what you have purchased from the store. After a few games of low scores you are offered to go back and play the game in increase your stars or to purchase the golden key for $.99 to unlock the closed levels. Basically you don't get a whole game unless you score highly and it seems difficult to score highly on the game's levels. When the option to purchase popped up it knew my name of my account and even had a line to click to edit my 1 click settings to buy items. In addition all of your purchases are only available on the device you purchased them on. If you own 3 devices you will have to purchase the same items 3 times.

I deleted the game.

The home screen has a heart on it that if your touch it you are taken to a special page to like the frog on Facebook, follow the frog on twitter, rate the frog on Amazon or to play the original version of the frog. This is really over the top for a game that I would consider to be targeted at children. This app contains the permissions to use the internet. In addition it contains code for Amazon InApp Billing and Flurry Analytics. There is also code to help integrate Facebook into the game application. There are no invasive permissions. Flurry Analytics can collect your game play and playing habits. This data can be sent back to the developers.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice game ruined by sneakiness April 24, 2014
Verified Purchase
How sneaky?

You can't really play the game in the way you'd like without spending more cash on In App Purchases. So whether you're tempted yourself, or especially if your kids are playing and you get soft-hearted to make the game easier or provide more content, or worse ... the kids buy the IAPs without you knowing about it - this game has the potential to cost you many times more than the listed price.

Here's why that doesn't measure up: There are dozens or hundreds of games that are just as much fun and do NOT have In App Purchasing or Social Media nags (another issue here). Those games cost the price they list, and no more.

Stick with those. You'll be happier in the end.

Not recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs more
The game is average. It needs improvement. It could be more challenging, and have more levels. Although it needs improvement it is better than the original.
