5.0 out of 5 stars Prepares your children (and you) to succeed in life, July 2, 1999

This review is from: From Playpen to Podium (Paperback)
Communication skills gained through speech and debate are the #1 predictor of success in business and in life. Unfortunately, many students today are woefully unprepared to communicate their ideas clearly (whether on paper or in spoken form). This book gives excellent, easy to understand and use, techniques, projects and other helps for parents who want to help their children develop or improve the communication skills they will need for everything from interpersonal relationships, to group settings to the business world. It is excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject, organized by age+skills, August 17, 2006
This review is from: From Playpen to Podium (Paperback)
I cannot recommend this book enough to teachers AND parents alike. It is organized with 16 concise, detailed chapters
and ends with a chapter for each age group 3-7, 8-12, and teens complete with timely tips, "make it memorable", How to and Future Adventures sections for each project for each different age group. Example: biographical sketch, impromtu, persuasive speech, advertisement, slide show, informative speech for the teen section alone. At the start of the book we learn the structure for communication excellence which is 6 pillars (I'll tell you 2 of the 6 as you really need to buy this book: creativity and awareness.) Then the author explains how to set up your home environment where communication excellence begins. Other chapters are Toddler communication, Infant communication, helping your child relate to others and so forth. Mr. Myers, the author, speaks to more than 20,000 teachers, parents and teens a year and he has this fine tuned for even begining beginners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Empower your children to become excellent communicators, July 5, 2010
This review is from: From Playpen to Podium (Paperback)
It was time for the oral book reports that come around at school. The young boy felt a knot tighten in his stomach as the teacher announced it and a wave of nausea as he realised that he hadn't prepared. He held his breath as he reached in to grab his piece of paper from the passing hat. What was written on it would determine his fate- when he would give his report. As he unfolded the paper he was crest fallen. He stared at the number in horror. "Oh no " he thought with despair and tears started streaming down his face..... Number one!

Eventually for each of us our number "comes up". If you want your children to excel as fantastic communicators in any situation that life throws at them then there are practical steps that you can take. I am an ex-school teacher who is now a homeschooling mum. I knew that I had to get my own copy of this outstanding resource book. It is the best book I have ever found that presents practical ideas that can be used to develop oral language skills. ( A very handy reference book for school teachers as well). It is presented in a very useable format of age appropriate activities gathered together in four sections. (Toddlers, Ages 3 to 7, 8- 12 and 13 and up.)

Dr Jeff Myers, amongst other things, has a doctorate in Communications, lectures at Bryan College and is an outstanding in demand public speaker. Having read and recommended this book to anyone who would listen I have gone on to purchase anything else that he has authored and have never been disappointed. This will definitely be one that won't gather dust on your shelf....
