5.0 out of 5 stars Great game!, April 7, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Call of Atlantis [Download] (Software Download)
"Call of Atlantis" is a most unusual mix of match 3 (M3), puzzle, and hidden object (HOG) game genres, and it's an awful lot of fun. The story is good, and the game is visually pleasing. Even the music is nice!! Hints are free but take time to recharge; the only negative thing that jumped out at me is that the hints are annoyingly small. The game has both voice-over and open captions, so it is fully usable by people who are hearing impaired.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun match-3 game with sharp graphics, September 5, 2010

This review is from: Call of Atlantis [Download] (Software Download)
Call of Atlantis is another great game from Playrix in the match-3 genre. Beautiful scenery, detailed animation, catchy music, and an original story make this stand out from norm.

Poseidon's not happy with the people of Atlantis, so he hid a number of large gems with special powers and only a brave and intelligent warrior (that being you) can solve the puzzles to return the gems to their rightful place and restore Atlantis. Each gem represents a city in ancient Greece and by travelling to each city, solving match-3 puzzles along the way, you learn tidbits of information about the city and people.

The most challenging aspect of this game, especially for match-3 beginners like me, are the match-3 puzzles. They start out easy but get progressively difficult. The goal is to drop 4-5 pieces of an item placed randomly to the bottom of the board where they can be claimed. As you progress, you'll run into objects like walls which must be avoided, frozen pieces that can be melted only by using them in a match-3 combination and so on. To assist you, you can get special items (again by solving them to the bottom) such as bombs which explode a big square of items, a "Zeus lightning" which eliminates all of the occurences of a single item, hourglasses to add time and so on. The most dramatic effect is your personal medallion resembling the color wheel. It charges with every match-4 you solve. Once fully charged you can use it to destroy a large number of random pieces on the board.

With each puzzle you solve, you get an item that belongs in a special room in the city. Once you collect 8-12 items you are taken to the special room and must return each item to its proper place. It's a logic puzzle but not too difficult. For instance, a marble tile will go on the floor tile that is missing a spot. Any art majors will know the apple goes in the hand of the statue of Aphrodite and so on. You'll get the gem but it is frequently broken into pieces and scattered throughout the room. By picking up each individual piece you will put the gem back together and restore the gem to it's proper place in the gem wheel under the sea. A short cutscene follows which explains the next city you will be traveling to. As you complete each city, it becomes available as a custom screensaver too.

My only gripe is the match-3 puzzles get too tough after about halfway through. Again, I'm a beginner and not very good at match-3 games. I wish there was an option to play in relaxed mode instead of racing a timer. If I wasn't racing the clock (and losing my limited number of lives in the process) I would have purchased this game in a heartbeat. Intermediate players should have no problem with this game, though, and pros should complete it easily.

All in all, a beautiful and fun game to play and that's coming from a guy who doesn't like match-3 games. Recommended.
