5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Visually Engrossing, Educational! oh boy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Spelling words and going insane is a blast!
I'm a sucker for Cthulhu or anything involving H.P. Lovecraft and it's great when you buy something for its theme and also find a great game in there. The goal of the game is quite simple and applicable to life: Be the first to reach at least 100 points worth of words without going insane.

My wife and I like our mixture of non typical (some Euro) games. This came as a big surprise with how much fun it is for such a wide range of people. You don't have to know the Lovecraft theme and the cards are even more interesting to those who don't. We played with family who thought the Cthulu tokens were goblins (easier not to explain, so they be goblins now). The game is sort of scrabble-ish, making words and scoring points. The words you create don't really have to be big fancy words in order to win. The value of the letter cards are not based on how hard that letter is to make a word, but on the amount of angles in the letters. Also the higher value of your words the more chance you have of going insane (you lose). We went insane while a steady paced 9 year gave us the beat down one game. It was so much fun for the entire family. Educational, Quick and 2-6 players too!

My friend Dave introduced me to this game at OmegaCon and I fell in love. The little, plastic Cthulhus make it a must on their own. If you can spell, you are in. This game can be played in a short amount of time but is hours and hours of fun. My wife and our children spend many nights playing it!

MUCH FUN!!!!!!!

I HIGHLY recommend this game!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Mythos Take on a word game a la Scrabble, November 20, 2011
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars

This is a word game that depends on cards, not tiles, and points are awarded based on how many angles the letters in your words have. That sounds confusing, but trust me, it's not.

It's extremely accessible for kids to play this game with their parents because of the durability of the tools, the use of cartoony monsters which young boys will appreciate, and the opportunity to practice spelling simple words. The rules are simple and can be explained to a group of new players in less than 3 minutes. You'll be playing without having to check the rules sheet in 2 turns.

The game is deceptively simple, but its simplicity does not detract from its entertainment value. Using the game in conjunction with Steve Jackson Games' Cthulhu Dice can be highly satisfying. You can find additional rules using that as an unofficial expansion on boardgamegeek.com and they're a blast and add tons of replayability and a level of strategy to an otherwise luck-driven game. The Cthulhu Dice add-on can be found here on Amazon and it costs only like 5 or 6 dollars, I think, so its worth looking into.

This is far and away my favorite word game and my friends' go-to game for intense fun in 30 minutes. Last night we played with two couples against each other, and with the dice add-on the game got really intense and humorous because the couples continually beat upon each other. A really great game; I'm smiling as I write this remembering just how much fun we had.

Anyway, I recommend this game to these people: Parents who want a cool looking word game for their family nights, fans of Lovecraft looking for a diversion from hardcore titles, casual groups of friends who occasionally game together, couples that like to double-date and need an ice-breaker activity.

This game, with or without the aforementioned dice, is worth a look. Have fun!

3.0 out of 5 stars Spelling words and going insane is a blast!, February 2, 2011

I'm a sucker for Cthulhu or anything involving H.P. Lovecraft and it's great when you buy something for its theme and also find a great game in there. The goal of the game is quite simple and applicable to life: Be the first to reach at least 100 points worth of words without going insane.

The components are very good, from the 5 cute little green Cthulhu pawns (great for stacking!) representing the sanity of each player to the wonderful art on the cards which include such favorites as: A Leng Spider licking a lollipop and a Vulthoom holding a valentine.

The gameplay boils down to spelling a word out of the 7 cards in your hand. The amount of points you earn for the word are determined by the amount of angles in each letter, for example: "E" is worth 4 points but "U" is worth none. Now that you know how many points your word is worth you roll a sanity check with the 20 sided die trying to roll equal to or higher than the word's worth or lose one of your cutie Cthulhus.

How not to win: If you lose all your pawns, you lose. If someone else gets to 100 points, you lose. If you lose all your pawns and someone gets to 100 you doubly lose.

Final thoughts: A fun word rummy type game with a good theme and high quality components. I only gave this game a 3 out of 5 because it is a simple game and could definitely use some house rules and be sure to try out the optional rules especially "The Unspellable Oath", where once you have only one pawn left you can turn in any combination of letters and score it because unhinged folks will believe anything is a word. So, go out and get this game and watch you and your friends go insane with wordy-Lovecraftian-goodness!

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun game, but not really Lovecraftean, January 23, 2011
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Unspeakable Words Card Game (Toy)
For all the Cthulhuesque trappings, this is simply a card-based word game -- score points by playing down words from the letters in your hand, gambling you can roll at or better the point score on a D20, and losing "sanity" when you fail. It's fast-paced and fun, but ultimately feels both too simple (it's 90% about playing the odds) and a bit of a cheat (you could strip away the Lovecraftean elements and have exactly the same game).
