This review is from: Livingstone Board Game (Toy)
After much waiting, we finally got Livingstone to the table tonight. It was me, my wife (ages 36 and 38) and my daughter who is 6. We left the cards out of the game because the text, for my daughter, would slow the game down too much.
First of all, the components in the game are excellent. The little treasure chests where you put your pounds to send to the Queen are excellent and caught my daughter's eye. But, even more so, the bag of gems is just about the best possible "gimmick" you could have for a 6 year old boy or girl. She also loved the art on the board and the little boat and tents. The game is perfect for her age.
Now, she did not really probably fully grasp the mechanics. After a bunch of plays I could see her catching on. She basically rolls the dice, chooses one of three actions (take money equal to the die, take gems equal to the die or place a tent on the row equal to the die). Without the cards, the game is fairly straight forward.
We had a great time. The game lasted an hour. Perfect. Buy it for the family. Later, with age and experience, you can add the cards and give depth.
