About the Author

Anton Chekhov, in full Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (born Jan. 29 [Jan. 17, Old Style], 1860, Taganrog, Russia—died July 14/15 [July 1/2], 1904, Badenweiler, Ger.), major Russian playwright and master of the modern short story. He was a literary artist of laconic precision who probed below the surface of life, laying bare the secret motives of his characters. Chekhov’s best plays and short stories lack complex plots and neat solutions. Concentrating on apparent trivialities, they create a special kind of atmosphere, sometimes termed haunting or lyrical. Chekhov described the Russian life of his time using a deceptively simple technique devoid of obtrusive literary devices, and he is regarded as the outstanding representative of the late 19th-century Russian realist school. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Chekhov's Plays by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov

Chekhov's "The Three Sisters", "The Sea-Gull", "Uncle Vanya" are my favorite plays. The translations are brilliant. Great ebook overall.

I "purchased" this title from Amazon (Kindle) for free. I wanted to revisit a classic text that I had not seen since college. The Kindle edition is eminently readable and Anton Chekhov's plays are better the second time around.

There is no way to navigate this ebook. It might have uncle vanya or not; I don't have time to flick 250 epages to find it. Delete from device.

It's an OK translation and enjoyable to read. There are some words and phrases that should have better annotation since there are a lot of references to Czarist culture that don't have explanations in the dictionary.

A nice adaption of Checkhov's plays. I found the series to be very well put together, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys plays by this Russian playwright.

Classic and exquisite.... No words can do justice to the beauty of the words written by chekhov.... Few of his best works, the plays are a treat to read.

Chekhov described his plays as comedies but when one sees them performed on the English speaking stage they are always ultra serious, am I missing something here or is Chekhovs definition of comedy different to mine. I saw a film called Unfinished piece for Player Piano and that was an early work by Chekhov done by Russians and what a film, Brilliant. The problem to me is that directors do not understand the Russian way of thinking and behaving and these plays need to be seen as frenetic, mad, comedies and performed that way. If you read Thorogoods Drop Dead Gorgeous it gets more mad as the book goes on thats how I see Chekov's plays but maybe I am wrong, I don't think so. Anyway read them and think of mad, enthusiastic, half baked Russian intelectuals, full of vigor and energy then Chekhov starts to come to life.
