This is great. If you like jazz and classical music, this is wonderful. Bach's music lends itself so well to jazz, it's almost as if J.S.could see the future.

Based on the cover, one would suppose these to be contemporary (2009) recordings, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Loussier's Bach playing in trio format. The 75 years old Loussier proudly states "This is the best playing of my life". This may well be true, but these recordings were made in the mid-eighties, most if not all of them previously available. No problem with the music, it's great. It is just not what you could reasonably expect. The sound, early digital, while perfectly acceptable, is nowhere near the standard of more recent, authentic, Telarc recordings. For those eagerly hoping for a new Loussier Bach-installment, this release is a major disappointment. Music 5 stars, sound 3, Telarc 1.

Really awesome stuff. I would have to think that Bach himself would have loved it and can only imagine what Bach could have created if he had the musical resources of today.

Loussier's jazz interpretations are subtle and unmatched. His playing is gentle, solid and indicates a basic and thorough knowledge of the classics.

I was introduced to the Jacques Loussier Trio with their original recording on vinyl. As some other reviewers noted the personnel on this recording are not the same as this current CD. The original recording won instant acclaim when it was released in France. Unfortunately, it is far less well known, or popular here in the US. Perhaps, that is because it straddles both Classical and the Jazz genre.

To my mind, the interpretations, and the performances of these pieces are absolutely superb, a testament to the great musicianship of all three players. If you are a fan of the acoustic bass, you have to let your ears feast on artistry demonstrated with these pieces.

If you enjoy this CD you might also wish to listen to the Swingle Singers, whose earliest recordings of Bach's music was also truly inspired.

I'm speechless. Where has this guy been all my life? Until a friend of mine introduced me two or three years ago I had never heard of Jacques. In reading recently a history of jazz in the western world, absolutely no mention of this great artist. Is jazz that parochial? Get this recording, and all of the many others you can lay your hands on. Technique, taste, imagination and musicality
will be your reward. Plus the perspective of many years' diligent application. Rod Langston, aficionado.

Jacques Loussier is a master jazz pianist, and more so when it comes to the Bach concertos, cantatas and sonatas improvisations. His trio has been together a long time and, as such, seem to know exactly what is in the mind of Loussier when he improvises; the tone, tempo, and choice of key at a particular moment is what makes listening to it a pleasure.

Jacques Loussier Plays Bach: The 50th Anniversary Recording
Bach in the 1960s I developed a fanatic thirst for Johann Sebastian Bach's two and three-part inventions and when I played them, I enjoyed putting the LP "Play Bach Jazz" by the Jacques Loussier Trio on the turntable as my accompaniment. It was totally boss (as we used to say back then)... Read More
