Stu Williamson,
By Bomojaz (South Central PA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Plays W/Charlie Mariano (24bt) (Mlps) (Audio CD)
This Bethlehem album was originally recorded in January 1956. Seven players were available for the date, though not all play on every tune. Williamson has a straight forward, somewhat restrained trumpet sound and style; he tends not to get too emotional and plays with very little embellishment. The two ballads (DARN THAT DREAM and TALK OF THE TOWN), which feature his playing exclusively, bear out his sound well. The best track is their version of Charlie Parker's RED CROSS, which swings hard and has excellent alto sax work by Charlie Mariano. A very decent and competent jazz date.
