Very good compilation of early GBS plays,

This review is from: Shaw, Plays by George Bernard (Signet classics) (Paperback)
The 4 GBS plays in this single volume paperback cover the early part of his career, with the first 3, "Mrs. Warren's Profession", "Arms and the Man" and "Candida" spanning the brief time from 1893 to 1895, and "Man and Superman" appearing after a jump of several years. Eric Bentley's vintage "old school" foreword places these plays in the context of Shaw's early career, and also makes some links with later plays like "Pygmalion". Bentley's prose can occasionally be oblique, but he also is willing to raise flaws and weaknesses in the plays and not treat every word from GBS as 24K gold. The plays are presented in chronological order, and this is appropriate. This is a very fine and convenient volume for those who want to get started with Shaw.
