4.0 out of 5 stars Krupa goes modern August 3, 2005
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
These arrangements were written by Gerry Mulligan when he was with the Krupa band at age 19 playing tenor and alto. This album of his early arrangements was recorded 12 years later when Mulligan returned to conduct the band at age 31. Krupa had recorded Disc Jockey Jump many years earlier and it became something of a hit. It's hard to understand why he waited all those years to record the balance of the arrangements. The album is one of the early stereo efforts, saxaphones left, trumpets right, a little too much ping pong effect but cleanly recorded (why wasn't this corrected in the remix?) But this is an excellent album, for Krupa a different, more modern sound compared to the Roy Eldridge/Anita O'Day band of Yesteryear.

This record is a must. Great arrangements and nice music. Not too much drum solos. Clear and neat drums by Gene.

5.0 out of 5 stars Krupa's Band Smoked! March 14, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Mulligan arrangements at their best, and Gene's re-constituted band was smoking. Each player was a musical star in his own right.

5.0 out of 5 stars An important aspect of Gene November 27, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
Most people associate GK with big band and swing, forgetting that he grew with popular tastes and spent considerable time in small ensembles. In fact he was a stalwart of Norman Granz' Jazz At The Philharmonic (JATP) concerts in small and medium ensembles, as well as in various trios and quartets. That said, the ensemble here is a big band, but the arrangements are anything but a nostalgia trip.

I love how the arrangements showcase Gene's abilities with more contemporary (for 1958) jazz. As for the Gerry Mulligan connection: Gerry was an alumni of Gene's big band and served as arranger and conductor for the New York recording session. The ensemble was comprised of: Al DeRisi, Marky Markowitz, Ernie Royal, Doc Severinsen and Al Stewart on trumpet; Eddie Bert, Billy Byers, Jimmy Cleveland Trombone, Willie Dennis, Urbie Green and Kai Winding on trombone; Sam Marowitz and Phil Woods on alto saxophone; Frank Socolow and Eddie Wasserman on tenor saxophone and Danny Bank on baritone saxophone. The rhythm section was comprised of Gene on drums, Hank Jones on piano, Barry Galbraith on guitar and Jimmy Gannon on bass.

This album is a delight as evidenced by the sound samples on this page. Give each a listen and I think you will agree.

If you are a Krupa fan who wants a more comprehensive survey of his music I highly recommend that you first check out the 10-Disc set title Kind of Krupa, which contains this album and a lot more of Gene's work from various periods in his career.
