This review is from: Plays Irving Berlin (Audio CD)
This is probably the Dave Pell Octet at its very best. Originally issued on a Trend 10" LP which I picked up used about 30 years ago; I've been waiting all these years for its reissue to clean up the sound. The arrangements are primarily by Shorty Rogers and Wes Hensel. Dave is not the greatest tenor guy around but he is good. Ronnie Lang may be one of the most under- appreciated alto players aroung, also doubling on baritone. The influence of the Miles Davis Nonet is apparent. The follow up album features Lucy Ann Polk on vocals and is also simply superb; all the members of the group are out of the Les Brown Band and apparently banded together to play in a more modern style. Grab it while it's still available.
