Whenever I see a new CD released that celebrates the music of Duke Ellington, I stop to take notice and look into it with serious interest. From the liner notes, it seems that James Spaulding took this seriously also. So, when I first played this CD, I was anticipating a sterling tribute to Ellington's music. However, I was a bit disappointed in the CD, even though the liner notes concluded that it was a "splendid album." Here are my reasons: First, the CD contains only eight tunes; as a "tribute," it should have at least 10 or 12 Ellington tunes, or probably more (he composed many, many tunes worthy for a "tribute" collection). Second, the solo performances on flute or soparano are generally repetitious - snippets of melody interlaced with frills, trills and scale runs. Next, my favorite track is, "I Love You Madly," but it's also the shortest track on the CD (only 2:13 minutes) but worthy of more improvisational attention. I should note that first tune ("Take the 'A' Train") and the last tune ("It Don't Mean Thing If It Aint Got That Swing") are fine renditions of classic Ellington. Avery Brooks' vocal on "Come Sunday" is sincere but grave, setting the tone for his other vocals. Yet, the fine backup work of Billy Higgins (drums) and Mtume (percussion) may be worth the price of the CD. The sound quality produced by Storyville Records is quite good. Alun Morgan's liner notes are informative but they are a bit over generous on his conclusion of this eight-tune "tribute."
