Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered edition of this 1974 album. Gil Evans was to have recorded with Jimi Hendrix. The idea was to feature the Hendrix solo guitar and voice against the cushion of Evans' orchestrations, much in the manner of the Gil Evans-Miles Davis collaborations of the late 1940's and again in the 1950's. Denied the opportunity when the guitarist died in London a week before the preliminary meetings were set, Gil forged ahead with a whole concert of Hendrix compositions at Carnegie Hall, and, with the same young group, the sessions for this album. Evans told Rolling Stone magazine: "Stop and think about Hendrix' guitar work, about how difficult it was, and is, to play a guitar that way - the use, the correct use, of electronics. And yet for him it was the natural way. What I do is try to keep Jimi in mind when arranging his music. a very, very great guitar player." Gil Evans and Jimi Hendrix - a fusion of rock and jazz, working properly for once, each style drawing from the other. Gil was fond of saying that he looked for the "living spirit" in any music he heard. That spirit is here, alive and well, within these tracks.

Much like his colleague Miles Davis, arranger Gil Evans was fascinated by the range of music that Jimi Hendrix was able to coax from his electric guitar. In this landmark fusion release, Evans re-arranged Hendrix's music for his big band with surprisingly effective results. One of the most exciting tracks on the album is the version of "Crosstown Traffic" which features the stinging guitar of John Abercrombie (what a daunting task it must have been to play guitar on a Hendrix tribute album) and the bluesy vocals of Marvin Peterson. This is a really nice melding of jazz and rock and roll - Abercrombie's solo is pure rock while the large horn section piles on the riffs a-la the Basie big band.

Evans is most well known for his atmospheric work with Davis on albums like Porgy and Bess and Sketches of Spain, and he takes that pastel-like atmospheric approach on some of the spacier tracks here, like the dreamy versions of "Little Wing" and "1983 A Merman I Should Be." Tracks like these counterbalance the blasting funk of "Voodoo Chile" creating a well balanced investigation of the Henrix songbook. This fine album would make an excellent starting point for rock fans who are curious about jazz but unsure where to start listening. The compositions are familiar from years of rock radio overplay, but the arrangements and interpretations are fresh and interesting.

I bought the vinyl back in 1974. When I saw that the CD contained "Little Wing" and 4 alternate takes got it from Amazon. Gil Evans was years ahead of his time. Although this music is almost 40 years old, it is as modern as any music today, jazz or otherwise. The opening song is "Angel", with an alto sax solo by David Sanborn that is simple outstanding. When Sanborn played with Gil Evans, this is what all the fuss was about!! "Crosstown Traffic" combined with "Little Miss Lover" features solos by John Abercrombie(the name is misspelled in the original liner notes) and Tom "Bones" Malone, later of the Blues Brothers and a fiery vocal by the incendiary Marvin Peterson. "Castles Made of Sand" has a tenor solo by the magnificent Billy Harper and goes without break into "Foxy Lady" with the title stated by tympani. Only Evans and his musicians would even think of doing this. "Up From the Skies" is an unedited version of the vinyl and last at least 3 minutes longer. "1983- A Merman I Should Turn to Be" is fantastic!! But "Voodoo Child" is the wildest song on the CD, because it features a growling synthesizer by David Horowitz. "Gypsy Eyes" is mostly an ensemble piece. The last song that is a final take is "Little Wing", which Evens plays on other cds. Again Sanborn has a dynamite solo but the song is Marvin Peterson's. His trumpet and vocal carry the song. This version was done about one year after the other songs were completed. Finally there are 4 alternate takes which are sufficiently different to warrant inclusion. This ranks with Evans' greatest work, including what he did with Miles and his "Out of the Cool" album and belongs in any collection of music by people who don't put jazz in a narrow category.

a welcome addition to my Hendrix collection. Great and idiocyncratic interpretations. also love "in from the storm," a multi-artist tribute album which wonderfully incorporates the London Metropolitan Orchestra.
