More About the Author

I'm the founder and editor of nytheatre.com, a website that provides lots of information about the New York City theatre scene, from Broadway to off-Broadway to the exciting indie theater sector. It was as editor of nytheatre.com that I became interested in bringing new American plays by emerging or unpublished authors to the attention of readers in the "Plays and Playwrights" anthology series. I've been working on nytheatre.com since 1997. I'm also the producer of nytheatrecast, the first weekly podcast series about NYC theatre. I'm a member of the American Theatre Critics Association; I probably see about 300 shows every year. Last year I was proud to receive (with NYTE's Managing Director) the Stewardship Award from the New York Innovative Theatre Foundation, in recognition of my work on nytheatre.com and as editor of the "Plays and Playwrights" books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true testament to Indie Theatre!, February 26, 2006
This review is from: Plays and Playwrights 2005 (Paperback)
Without a doubt, there is a Renaissance happening in the Off-Off Broadway community right now. Groups of consistency exciting and truly innovative work such as Partial Comfort Productions, Vampire Cowboys Theatre Company, Les Freres Corbusier, Youngblood, Boomerang, Redbull, and others are pushing the definition of what a young company can do on the fringes of Broadway and are quickly showing that they can do it just as well with a smaller budget. It's theatre that's pulling in more younger and more audacious crowds, reminding us that theatre does not have to be a place for just the wealthy and pretentious, but it can and is about us too. Martin Denton and NYTheatre.com have gone a good way towards helping this new rebirth of theatre happen and this book series, as well as their website, stands as one of the sole pieces of documentation of the rapidfire growth of these fresh, imaginative, and sometimes deliberately outrageous groups destined for legendary status. Each year, the books just keep getting better and PLAYS AND PLAYWRIGHTS 2005 is no exception. All the plays are exciting, unique, and engrossing. They prove that the art of theatre is alive and well. I highly recommend picking up this book and going out and checking out more Indie theatre. It'll be the stuff you will tell your friends about in the years to come. Particular highlights in PLAYS AND PLAYWRIGHTS 2005 include "Vampire Cowboy Trilogy"; "Animal"; "Elephant"; "Platonov! Platonov! Platonov! or the Case of a Very Angry Duck".
