Product Description

This is the first volume of the popular yearly series of anthologies by emerging playwrights known as the PLAYS AND PLAYWRIGHTS series. It was first published in 2000 and has been out of print for several years.

PLAYS AND PLAYWRIGHTS FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM - THE E-BOOK includes the scripts of seven full length plays, plus as a bonus, new unpublished short work by the playwrights, especially made available for this electronic version.

These seven plays have been performed regionally and abroad. They are as ripe for presentation today as they were in 2000. They offer scene work and audition monologues for actors.

Kirk Wood Bromley's MIDNIGHT BRAINWASH REVIVAL is written partly in verse and features cross-dressers, mismatched lovers, false prophets and madmen and it all takes place in the Utah desert.

WHEN WORDS FAIL... by David Dannenfelser is a tender, innovative comedy about the survival of the human spirit in the Information Age. There is as much that has to be seen in this piece as has to be heard.

MAKING PETER POPE by Edmund De Santis is a comedy about a young gay man struggling to gain control of his life after his mother's death and his father's quick remarriage. A timeless story that is as relevant today as when it was written.

Lynn Marie Macy's CRUNCHING NUMBERS is made up of three linked one-act plays dealing with the angst and anguish that comes with turning thirty. Each of the one-acts can stand alone or can make a full evening of theatre. As common a topic today as when written, the stories are told with a true comedic style that makes them timeless.

CAFE SOCIETY by Robert Simonson seems almost prescient. He writes a cockeyed satire of contemporary urban America in which a young woman goes to hell and back just to get her daily dose of iced de-caf. Filled with funny lines and a comic set-up, there is much truth told here.

Gary Rudoren and David Summers wrote "SO, I KILLED A FEW PEOPLE..." at a time when reality show and tell-all confessionals were not as prevalent as they are today. This is a chillingly comic monologue delivered by a convicted serial killer on death row whose final request is to put on a one man show.

Garth Wingfield's ARE WE THERE YET? is described as a bittersweet comic drama about a young woman's renewal and rebirth following a not-so-great medical diagnosis. It is a timeless play of faith and hope in the human spirit.

In addition this e-book includes the following bonus material:

Kirk Wood Bromley gives us the first 10 minutes of a new play continuing his style of poetic writing that instantly produces pictures in the reader's mind.

David Dannenfelser pens an almost silent short play, AN OTHERWISE EMPTY ROOM (MANHATTAN), where it's all in the seeing -- perfect for the physical actor to tackle.

A darker turn is had in Edmund De Santis' short play SEBRESQUE, but there's a quirkiness to it that would make it a hoot to produce.

Lynn Marie Macy looks at a very contemporary mother/daughter relationship in her one-act, WRACKED.

Gary Rudoren offers an excerpt from his screenplay, ARCHIE NUNN KILLED A FEW PEOPLE which is based on his play.

Garth Wingfield writes a very up-to-date piece, STORY TIME, with an acerbic wit and just a bit of sarcasm.

This e-book is an exact duplication of the original book with these few differences. Due to contractual arrangements HORSE COUNTRY by C.J. Hopkins could not be included. All the author bios have been updated and Martin Denton, editor, has written a new PREFACE TO THE E-BOOK. The original INTRODUCTION and the PREFACE TO THE PRINT EDITION are both included.

This collection was very well received in 2000. How does it feel today? Would be most interested in hearing your opinions. Write us at info@nyte.org.

More About the Author

I'm the founder and editor of nytheatre.com, a website that provides lots of information about the New York City theatre scene, from Broadway to off-Broadway to the exciting indie theater sector. It was as editor of nytheatre.com that I became interested in bringing new American plays by emerging or unpublished authors to the attention of readers in the "Plays and Playwrights" anthology series. I've been working on nytheatre.com since 1997. I'm also the producer of nytheatrecast, the first weekly podcast series about NYC theatre. I'm a member of the American Theatre Critics Association; I probably see about 300 shows every year. Last year I was proud to receive (with NYTE's Managing Director) the Stewardship Award from the New York Innovative Theatre Foundation, in recognition of my work on nytheatre.com and as editor of the "Plays and Playwrights" books.
