Good fidelity---less than exciting material,
By
This review is from: Plays And Sings Shaw (Audio CD)
On this disc Pastor does a nice job performing some of the songs he made with Artie Shaw. However, the music, while high fidelity, comes off as uninspired. It is certainly worth the modest price, but does not have the inspired quality of some other retrospective material recorded by other artists during this period. For outstanding high fidelity performances by Big Band Era artists give a listen to Charlie Barnet's Everest Years material, any Count Basie studio material from his Roulette recording period, Freddy Martin's "Smooth Sounds of the Great Dance Bands," Glen Gray's "Casa Loma in Hi Fi" (outstanding, and also released by Collectibles), Vaughn Monroe's "There I Sing It, Swing It Again," (also on Collectibles), Andy Kirk's "Mellow bit of Rhythm," or The Big 18's "Live Echoes of the Swinging Bands" (if you can find a copy). If you want to round out your library with big band re-creations, this definitely deserves a place.
