Gould-ish!,

This review is from: Plays Songs By Jerome Kern (Audio CD)
I think for many, Andre Previn playing the music of someone like Kern might realize that, like the genius of Glen Gould playing the complete Partitas of Bach, this disc can make some a bit testy. Especially for those who want melody, but with "body." No strings, string choir or trio here. This is not what Previn was about in these brave ventures. In a time period where Percy Faith, Ferrante & Teicher & Hollyridge Strings were the MOR icons, this strips the song to its elements and exposes the beauty of what most call melody.
These are superb "excercise" interpretations of some wonderful songs and showing what you can do with 88 keys and no chance to hide behind an arranger's gimmicks. It is both exciting and soothing. Previn is the best at bringing the jazz out in almost any "standard" and not putting it into the realm of Monk."Whip-Poor-Will" is my favorite, but you cannot pass go without a listen to "Long Ago and Far Away." This is worth a place in any collection of good music. Also likely to become a collectible as well since purity like this is loosing its audience..that is sad.

I wanted a fairly straight rendition of Jerome Kern's beautiful songs, but this is not it.
