Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

A trumpeter with chops from here to San Diego, a no-nonsense approach to soloing, and an 18-piece band that hits and swings hard, Wayne Bergeron is a classic product of the West Coast studio system. The patron saint of Plays Well With Others is the late Maynard Ferguson, whose appearance here on the comparatively toned down "Maynard and Waynard" was one of his final recorded efforts. Bergeron, who has been heard behind countless pop artists, is not the stratospheric threat Ferguson was, but he embodies the same brash aesthetic in leading his well-drilled ensemble through a program that ranges from driving originals by the likes of Big Phat Band leader Gordon Goodwin to a rhythmic awakening of "Georgia" to go-for-the-throat ballads like "Requiems" to a frisky reading of Rimsky Korsakov's "Scheherazade." Those who like a bit more subtlety or wit in their mainstream big bands might want to look elsewhere. But for those who like these sounds straight up and fancy free, this is a good place to be. --Lloyd Sachs

5.0 out of 5 stars Stellar trumpet playing over a swingin' big band January 10, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Wayne Bergeron is a former lead trumpet player for trumpet/band leader & legend Maynard Ferguson. Bergeron also has been for many years one of the leading (if not the leading) Hollywood studio trumpet players, and somehow finds time to play with the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat band. If you're listening to a movie or TV show with big, brassy, soaring lead trumpet lines there's a pretty good chance you're hearing Wayne Bergeron leading the trumpet section.

This CD -- Wayne's second under his own name -- is a fine collection of modern big band arrangements with plenty of solo opportunities for this master trumpeter. This is *not* just an album for trumpet geeks, though: it's a first-rate modern big band ensemble playing on a nice mix of original tunes and *great* arrangements of standards like "You Go to My Head" and "Georgia". There's even a big band arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov's theme from Sheherazade, which manages to be quite interesting (and not overly cute, as classical-to-jazz arrangements often are). Another great arrangement is the opener, "Torture Without End", which is reminiscent of Latin-jazz-fusion songs like La Fiesta and Spain. If you're a fan of other modern big bands -- like Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band (where Bergeron plays lead) -- you'll definitely feel at home with these arrangements (By the way, the CD lists the arrangers/composers of every song with contact information so interested band leaders/educators can acquire the charts for themselves).

If you *are* a trumpet geek, then one of the highlights of the CD is the duet "Maynard & Waynard," which has Wayne playing a long, loping duet with his mentor Maynard Ferguson, in what was apparently Maynard's last recording before his death last year at age 78.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Epitome Of "Cool"... January 9, 2007
Format:Audio CD
When I was a kid, my Dad told me that a person who is "cool" is someone who makes the world a better place (and more fun) just because they're here. Wayne is COOL... and "Plays Well With Others" is BRILLIANT. All of us working musicians aspire to be like Wayne. He raises the consciousness of every project he's involved with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plays Well Period!! February 8, 2007
By Paul Bb
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Wayne is, by far, the best trumpet player alive today! You have heard him already unless you live in a cave in the wilderness! Listen to his soaring lines on the soundtract for the Incredibles and you get the idea. I am a band leader and a trumpet player (I use the term loosely after hearing Wayne!) This CD, his second, is a joy to listen to and another step up from his first (I enjoyed the first one too) He is coming into his own now and the buzz in the music community is that he is the heir to the "Trumpet King" throne! If you enjoy powerhouse big band music and the sound of a great trumpet player be sure to add this one to your collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars He Really DOES Play Well with Others :-) ... March 15, 2007
Format:Audio CD
Plays well by himself too! Wayne Bergeron is to trumpet playing what LeBron James is to basketball. (OK, I'm from NE Ohio. And although Wayne's obviously not a "spring chicken" anymore, he's still a monster!) As a trumpet player who knows playing the Wayne plays doesn't just happen, I admire his hard work coupled with his natural talent to make some pretty beautiful music.

The variety of styles represented on this CD is great. He does some serious screaming, some great ensemble stuff, some wonderful improvisation and just flat out plays well with others :-) ...

I can pretty much assure you won't be disappointed. If you are, write to Wayne. He's promised a triple refund of the purchase price for those not completely satisfied with this CD. Well, maybe not, but I'm pretty sure he'd be able to and never have to send a cent.

Get it. Listen to it. Be inspired (he really is good). Be nauseated (he's so good it'll make you sick). Enjoy (music made with such passion, polish and power is an absolute pleasure to hear).

5.0 out of 5 stars No Wayne, no gain! March 13, 2007
Format:Audio CD
How could a trumpet fan, or any jazz fan for that matter, not dig this music? Wayne Bergeron has taken the baton from Maynard Ferguson and he is running with all his might. He has assembled an extremely talented bunch and allows them all to shine. "Maynard and Waynard" reminds me of Dizzy Gillespie sparring with Roy Eldridge: Mutual respect between two friendly competitors punching it out in a jazz duel. The latin-tinged "Endless Torture" will make you press the gas pedal to the floor. Every track is good. This is a CD for a long drive on a sunny day with the top down on the convertible Mustang GT. Crank it up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Plays Very Well All of the Time! February 24, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Another great album from Wayne Bergeron and a kickin' big band!

Please keep them coming - Wayne displays amazing, musical and clean playing all of the time - "Plays Very Well All of the Time" for sure.

Excellent support from trumpet greats like Ric Baptist and others.

And the duet with Maynard is a tasteful send off to the man who inspired so many trumpet players!

Cool to hear that Wayne received a Grammy nomination for his work on this - long over due.

It doesn't get any better than this - listen, and prove it to yourself.
