4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Seat! December 14, 2013
Wheel Used: Thrustmaster TX
My Height/Weight: 6'2" / 185 lbs

I got this seat about 3 days ago and absolutely love it. Setting up the seat was extremely easy, comes with straight forward instructions. The metal that the seat frame is made out of feels sturdy, and the fabric that the actual seat is made out of feels very well made and is super comfortable.

The seat provides you with a lot of options as far as customization goes. The pedal holder can be extended outward for taller people (I had to extend it just a little bit from how it arrived). The spot that the wheel is mounted on can be tilted up or down, and the seat itself can be reclined/inclined depending on how you like to play. I've only got about 3 hours of play time with this seat, but so far I feel like its been a great investment. Not only is it a very nice seat, but its actually made me enjoy my wheel more than before. The wheel was painless to mound, just has two screws. Once mounted it feels very sturdy.

There are two reasons why I gave it 4/5 stars.
1) The medal triangular pieces that the side straps go into (that recline the seat) push a little bit into my legs while I play. After a couple of hours of play time, you can start to feel it a bit. I'm going to wrap them in something to see if that helps.
2) The plastic piece that you turn around to lock the wheel stand in place once you're seated feels a little cheap. Not sure how long it will last, but its a pretty big solid piece of plastic, so hopefully it'll be ok for a while

3.0 out of 5 stars Warning for users with Shifters / Gearbox December 12, 2013
By Ernest
Warning for: (Logitech G27 Users)

The Playseat Challenge does not offer a mount for your shifter, you'll have to purchase this separately (search for Playseat Logitech G27 Gearshift Support) which is an additional $40

Although the Challenge does not offer a way to tilt your pedal base, I bought a few pieces of wood and had home depot cut it into a triangle, so that it supports the entire length of the mount. Seems to work just fine for about $20

What's nice about the Challenge is it does fold up compactly as opposed to the other Playseats, when storage space is a consideration this unit is a good choice

3.0 out of 5 stars Could be a little wider (3.5 star rating) June 18, 2014
Verified Purchase
The Challenge is perfect for my apartment given its low weight and ability to fold up for storage. However, it's slightly narrower than normal chairs and that loses it those 1.5 stars. The straps at the sides which determine the chair's recline are just a little too close to the body for comfort. Given that they're not padded in any way, any extraneous movement while in the seat can lead to unpleasant scrapes.

Other than that however, the chair works as it should. The extendable chair stand looks like it should just snap off while being useless for preventing the chair from flipping, but it's sturdier than it looks and does its job well. The rotating wheel stand is great, and even fully open, as long as the aforementioned stand is extended, the chair does not flip even with the extra weight from the wheel. Finally, the pedal stand works as expected and is a simple and elegant solution for keeping the pedals where you want them.

I would recommend this product to people who do not want a more permanent driving simulator solution or just don't have the space for one. However, the chair is slightly uncomfortable due to its narrower width at the hip area.

After Christmas I decided to make the leap and try to get a good racing setup for the PS3 that I would use with Gran Turismo and the F1 games I have. When I found the Playseat Challenge it seemed like a great fit in that when I wasn't using the setup it could be folded up and put in a closet (with the wheel and pedals still attached) where as the other setups just had too large of a footprint. The seat itself is great and has quality build components and for a 6' tall 200 lb man it works just great (though I'll say it could be easier to get in and out of but that's minor).

Great mounts for wheel and pedals
Seat molds to your body since the seat itself is flexible

Doesn't come with a shifter mount for G27 and it's insane to me that they charge > $50 for the piece of metal to mount it. I just went to Lowe's and bought a L piece of aluminum, cut it, drill holes and it works great for maybe $10.

My height & weight: 6', 250lbs, 38-40" waist.
Equipment: Logitech G27 wheel & Shifter, Fanatec ClubSport V2 pedals

Simply put, I fit perfectly. Getting in is a bit tricky as I can't lift my wheel out of the way completely due to my L-shaped desk, but once in place, and after a quick... umm... adjustment... this is one of the most comfortable seats I have ever used. I was a little worried about how well I'd fit as I'm a big guy, but the seat was easy to adjust and I fit just fine. If you have larger than a 40" waist I'd imagine things could get a bit tricky. Below 40", you're going to fit perfectly. On to some long-winded thoughts:

Build Quality: This is a very sturdy unit. People on gaming forums and people who own dedicated cockpit rigs tend to laugh at it and call it a glorified lawn chair, but it really is a well-built, well-thought out unit. The seat material is a quality, padded ultrasuede type material with nice red stitching. The tubing is solid with a nice matte black powdercoat finish. Once everything is set in place and you are locked in the seat doesn't wobble, tilt, or do anything other than hold you comfortably in place.

Assembly/Adjustment: The instructions are vague, but there really isn't much to do in the way of assembly. Very easy. Once assembled the unit is rather simple to adjust. The seat adjustments are done via adjusting the various Velcro straps that control lumbar support, thigh support, and the angle of the seat back. Unfortunately the wheel mount is only tilt adjustable. It is not height adjustable and does not telescope.
