3.0 out of 5 stars Better than the liner system, December 8, 2001
By A Customer
We started out using the Playtex Nurser system and I hated it. The bags were a pain (...), and not worth the money, and the nipples left a huge ring around my baby's mouth and she leaked formula out of both sides. It was awful. We switched to the Vent-Aire bottles. They have worked okay for us, but I have found that the vent in the bottom becomes clogged quite easily. Also, I always notice air coming in through the nipple and getting bubbles in the formula, which these bottles are supposed to prevent. I have found that a vacuum can be eliminated by loosening the cap on the bottom, but at 3am it's hard to remember you did that, and you and baby end up covered in formula.

The Stage 1 nipples are slow, yes, but that's the point. If baby is gulping too much air, then a slower nipple is the way to go. I found that after my baby used these nipples for 2 weeks she had no problem getting fluid out of them. The Y cut in the nipple just takes some getting used to.

Also, using a traditional bottle warmer is ineffective with these bottles, because heat cannot travel up through the bottom of the bottle to heat the formula, and of course plastic isn't a good heat conductor anyway. As for the baby who got sick using these bottles- I don't see how that is possible. It's not air that causes acid reflux- it's diet. Granted, if she was swallowing air, it could cause spit up, but not spitup so bad a baby ends up hospitalized. Burping a baby relieves the problem before it even becomes a major issue.

I would recommend these bottles over the Playtex Nursers- but I think that I would go with the Johnson's Healthflow system in the future.

I switched to the VentAire bottles because my one-month old son was gulping too much air with the regular Gerber bottles and 3-hole nipples and I DID NOT want to use the drop-in liner system. The amount of air that is swallowed is CONSIDERABLY less therefore causing alot less discomfort during and after a feeding. Be forwarned however that the Stage 2 nipples that come with the bottles are FAST for a little one! I purchased some Stage 1 nipples (0-6 months) for the bottles and they are really hard to get any liquid out of (I tried it myself) so I'm using the Stage 2 nipples. After using these bottles for about two weeks, he has adjusted just fine to the fast-flow nipples. I also like how both ends of the bottle come off for better cleaning! The box warns that the "Bubble Free Vent" may become clogged. I have not had a problem with that. The only problem I'm having is finding extra Stage 2 nipples in the stores- all the extra nipples for sale are Stage 1. Good luck!

4.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Leak!!!, December 4, 2003

When I first saw this, I was sure that it would leak, but it just seemed like sure an innovative idea that I bought one anyway.

I unscrewed the nipple ring and the bottom of the bottle. I was so sure that it would leak if I put anything liquid in it. I filled the bottle full of water and tossed it around on a white sheet to see if it leaked. It didn't, but I still wasn't sure.

So, I washed the bottle in hot water. I've noticed that some bottles leak after being washed. Then, I tried the sheet experiment again. It didn't leak. This bottle is 9 months old and still hasn't leaked!

3.0 out of 5 stars I Found a Flow Solution! - Must read:, October 4, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Playtex VentAire Advanced Standard Bottles 6-Ounce, 3 Pack (Colors Vary) (Baby Product)
My wife and I just purchased a single stage 2 bottle to try it out on our 3 month old. The package is very vague about how to use and I had to laugh when I saw that you couldn't use in a steamer to sterilize. We've determined that Playtex should really test their products before putting them out on the shelf for first time parent consumers. I've only used the bottle twice now, and it seems to work okay. How long? We'll have to see about that...

When we opened the package and boiled all the parts, my curiousity got the best of me. Needless to say, I decided to put myself in the baby's shoes and test it out myself with water. After filling and closing all the lids, I attempted to draw the water from the nipple. Yip. The majority of these reviews are correct! Your baby will need to be able to suck chrome off a bumper to get anything out. However, I found a simple solution. With your index finger and thumb, squeeze and roll the tip of the nipple several times. This allows the nipple hole to crack it's sticky silicon seal. I guess when these bottles are manufactured, the silicon rubber tends to stick together resulting in the hole sealing itself. This is also true with the one-way rubber seal that allows air to pass through and not the liquid. It appears as though this silicon rubber material needs to be "broken in" before it can work effectively. It's silicon rubber, don't be afraid to stretch it out a little to break it in. Hopefully this will help many of you whom have purchased and having the same problems with the flow issue. I got so frustrated trying it out myself that I was ready to walk up to the Playtex corporate offices and picket against all their baby products. Best wishes to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Won't consider any others..., August 27, 2001

I have tried most brands/types of bottles on the market, and feel that the Playtex Vent-Aire are the best for my baby. My son, who is now three, was weaned from the breast at three months, and this is the only bottle he would use. They are very easy to fill and clean. A couple of minor drawbacks I have discovered are: 1) the "Y" cut of the nipples tend to wear out a bit more quickly than other styles; and 2) on one occasion, the base part of the nipple shrank a bit from frequent washing, and fell out of the screw top of the bottle ... My friend's daughter, when weaned, also would only accept this bottle; no others would do, even the more expensive, "more like Mom" Avent. Try it...you'll like it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best bottles ever, October 19, 2001

I've tried 3 kinds of bottles before finding, the 4th bottle, the Vent-air by Playtex, it has proved time and time again two managable babies. This bottle lets in no air for the baby and easy to take apart and CLEAN. Although the stage 1 nipple is very difficult to get anything out of the stage 2 works well but a fast drip for young babies but they have adapted well. A must have for any baby. Comes in a variety of colors nice to have for the color coding bottles for twins or more.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL BOTTLES, January 16, 2003
By
This review is from: Playtex VentAire Advanced Standard Bottles 6-Ounce, 3 Pack (Colors Vary) (Baby Product)
THIS BOTTLES ARE GREAT. MY ONE MONTH OLD LOVES THEM. THEY ARE EASIER TO HOLD AND HAVE SOOO MUCH LESS AIR WHICH MEANS LESS BURPING. THEY ARE REAL EASY TO CLEAN. THE DIRECTIONS SAY DO NO BOIL MICROWAVE OR PUT INTO BOTTLE WARMER. WELL ME BIENG THE DARE DEVIL THAT I AM TRYING TO MAKE THINGS FASTER AND EASIER I TRIED AND GUESS WHAT AS LONG AS YOU TAKE THE NIPPLE AND CAP OFF YOU CAN DO ALL THIS THINGS. I DONT REALLY RECOMMEND THE MICROWAVE CAUSE IT NUKES SOME OF THE VITIAMINS BUT BOILING SUBMERGING IN HOT WATER AND THE BOTTLE WARMERS IT PASSED THE TEST WITH FLYING COLORS. THE ONLY THING THAT [is not good] IS THAT I GIVE [my daughter] 3 AND A HALF OUNCES AND ITS NUMBER IN EVEN TWOS 2,4,6 SO I HAVE TO USE A MEASURING CUP OF ANOTHER BOTTLE FOR THE RIGHT "DOSAGE" BUT THATS IS NOTHING COMPARED TO MUCH LESS BURPING AND GAS. WHICH MEANS AFTER FEEDING THE BABY IS RELAXED AND READY TO EITHER SLEEP OF PLAY. ITS WORTH THE MONEY. EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE NOT THAT EXPENSIVE.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well for nursing baby, January 23, 2003

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Playtex VentAire Advanced Standard Bottles 6-Ounce, 3 Pack (Colors Vary) (Baby Product)
I bought these bottles after searching for a good way to feed my nursing infant expressed breast milk when I return to work. These bottles seem to be much like natural nursing. With a regular bottle and nipple he got so much milk all over himself he would hardly get any in his tummy. The VentAire system is so much like breast feeding he took to it right away. The only reason I don't give them 5 stars is because our bottle warmer doesn't seem to work on these due to the rubber vent seal at the bottom. The milk has to be warmed in another container and poured into the VentAire bottle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard for newborns, February 5, 2002
By A Customer
On reviewer stated her newborn couldn't use the bottles well. I learned a trick for the problem when the baby is sucking but can't pull enough through Stage 1s. Cup your hand over the bottom of the bottle (the vent) and blow. The vents get clogged. You know if it loose if you can pinch the nipple and the milk streams out of the nipple. Pretty easy routine when checking the temperature. If it is clogged from formula settling, then milk won't stream out with a pinch test.

My son loves these bottles, but started using them in combination with the Healthflow system when he was a newborn. Now that he is older he have a definite preference for the Vent-aire. He seems to burp less, likes the colors and doesn't spill or dripple as much formula. I would recommend these bottles, but be prepared if they have a hard time sucking, to use something like Healthflow for the first month.

1.0 out of 5 stars I WANT MY MONEY, April 30, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Playtex VentAire Advanced Standard Bottles 6-Ounce, 3 Pack (Colors Vary) (Baby Product)
My 1 month old daughter is still sleeping from the work out I gave her trying to feed her from this bottle. 1/2 hour = 1/2 ounce. She was sucking and sucking and nothing! Don't waste your money!
If you have a gassey baby try Dr. Browns, if your baby is fine, try Advent or any other plain old bottle.
