Book Description

3 and upP and upBright & Early Playtime Books
Many, many adults name this book as their favorite Little Golden Book. Generations of kids have interacted with lovable, furry old Grover as he begs the reader not to turn the page—for fear of a monster at the end of the book. “Oh, I am so embarrassed,” he says on the last page . . . for, of course, the monster is Grover himself! This all-time favorite is now available as a Big Little Golden Book—perfect for lap-time reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun re-imagining of an old favorite, November 28, 2006
This review is from: Please Do Not Open this Book! (Bright & Early Playtime Books) (Hardcover)
This pop-up version of the 1970s Sesame Street classic, "The Monster At The End Of This Book" captures the same sense of fun and goofy audience participation as the original. The pop-up gags are enjoyable -- when Grover tries to tie the book shut, or nail the pages shut in order to prevent readers from getting to the end, we now get to see him pulling on the rope and hammering the nails. When his brick wall collapses, a 3-D Grover now sits among the wreckage. In opting for the participatory style of the pop-up medium, this new version mildly undercuts the book's original attraction, the fun that kids can have when adults ask them, "Do you think we should turn the page this time? maybe we should stop reading the book..." They can still howl nooooooo! turn the page! but with the thrill of a pop-up behind each page, it's harder to make the case that maybe we should give poor Grover a break, just this once. Of course none of this prevented my kid from insisting we read this one over and over -- she'd read both the original version and the shorter board-book edition before, but she really went ga-ga over this one. So, it's been road-tested in our household, and passed with flying colors. A fun book. Poor Grover.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun presentation kids will enjoy., October 7, 2006
This review is from: Please Do Not Open this Book! (Bright & Early Playtime Books) (Hardcover)
While the interactive pulls, zips and wheels may not be appropriate for library lending collections, parents and any with kids in the home will want to consider the 35th anniversary edition of Sesame Street's best-selling book MONSTER AT THE END OF THIS BOOK, which has been adapted here into a 'Bright and Early Playtime' title blending text from the original with tab slides, flaps and more. Mike Smollin's bright Sesame Street illustrations come to life in a fun presentation kids will enjoy.

When I read the description for this book, it gave me the impression it was a new chapter so to speak in the Monster at the End of the Book. It was nothing of the sort. All this book is, is the original story with some pop-ups and pull tabs. My Grandaughter, who is two years old, has had the original since she was born. It is her favorite story!! Once she saw the book, she too was a bit disappointed. The interaction ment nothing to her! However, she thought she had two of the same favorite stories so I couldn't take it away from her to return it or I would have.
