5.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining
I took this book to the hospital with me, to read while resting up after the birth of our eighth child. I defiantly recognized myself and my family in the pages! It was perfect light reading about subjects close to my heart.... my Faith, my family, and homeschooling. I'm sure the nurses wondered what made the crazy grand multi-para in room 301 laugh out loud every few...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as funny as people have been saying!
This book has been recommended in Catholic circles for some time, so I finally purchased it. I shouldn't have. I was very disappointed. I didn't even crack a smile, until the chapter on trying to pray the rosary with children. That one was hysterical! Still, it is only a few pages out of the book. I think the reason it falls flat is because it is so impersonal. You...

5.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining, June 1, 2005
This review is from: Please Don't Drink the Holy Water! (Paperback)
I took this book to the hospital with me, to read while resting up after the birth of our eighth child. I defiantly recognized myself and my family in the pages! It was perfect light reading about subjects close to my heart.... my Faith, my family, and homeschooling. I'm sure the nurses wondered what made the crazy grand multi-para in room 301 laugh out loud every few minutes. It was this book. Just the Rx to help you see the funnier side of this counter cultural life we have chosen. Not all of the selections are as funny as, say, Erma Bombeck, but they do make you think, and chances are you will see yourself and your family in these pages!

5.0 out of 5 stars Comic Relief for Moms, October 21, 2005
This review is from: Please Don't Drink the Holy Water! (Paperback)
I went to bed in a blue funk one night - it had been raining for about a week; the kitchen we were renovating wasn't progressing as fast as I wanted; the kids were tired of schoolwork; I hadn't felt God for awhile in prayer; and I ate too much while I was doing some writing (stemming back to my university essay-writing habits!). I felt chubby, tired and blue... and I picked up "Please Don't Drink the Holy Water" by Susie Lloyd and found myself chuckling.

I chuckle every time I read this book - every two or three sentences to be exact. You know, it takes a lot to make me chuckle sometimes! I don't normally read funny things or watch comedies but Susie's book is just so good! Being an experienced Mom, her unique perspective on the many mundane experiences of family life is totally refreshing, definitely funny, and worth the read. In a vocation where we can take life way too seriously at times, I think Susie's book is a wonderful 'mind' break from cares and concerns , and a real way to restore a flagging sense of humor.

In the Mystical Body of Christ , there are many talents and gifts given for the health of the whole body - and Susie has a unique talent that God wants her to share for our benefit. Definitely a book to add to your homeschool purchases

5.0 out of 5 stars Talented, delightful author (in her not-so-spare time), December 20, 2004
By
This review is from: Please Don't Drink the Holy Water! (Paperback)
A delightful, witty little book that presents to the world a talented writer, a sort of Catholic homeschooling Erma Bombeck.
If she isn't already syndicated in every major Catholic paper in the U.S., that shows you how out-of-it a lot of those periodicals are. Her style is gently acerbic and playfully respectful. She's breezy, but you realize there's a significant intellect here--and not just in the occasional (near occasional?) scholastic reference.

Plus, Mrs. Lloyd does a great thing--she completely demystifies and humanizes "homeschoolers"--the parents and kids that are, with little fanfare, revolutionizing education. They are the wave of the future, as statistics are bearing out. So folks might as well start getting to know them. This book, full of mishaps, missteps, but also love and laughter, is a great start. It will bring smiles, grins, and, every now and then, a laugh-out-loud. It is charming, witty, and --in more than one sense, perhaps--graceful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book for All (Catholic) Families, September 19, 2005
This review is from: Please Don't Drink the Holy Water! (Paperback)
Sit back with a cup of tea and enjoy this book about one thriving, boisterous, Catholic family. Susie Lloyd's book offers the perfect balm for frazzled or stressed-out parents. I laughed until I cried, and then I had to read aloud entire chapters to my family. This book is not just for homeschoolers: surely every parent can relate to Susie Lloyd's hilarious description of "Family Prayer: An Occasion of Sin" or "Fight Reruns." And then there is the chapter about Klupper, the dog as big as a donkey! Her writing style is breezy, witty, and not without depth. This book will be a source of real encouragement for Catholic families today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Insight, March 6, 2006
This review is from: Please Don't Drink the Holy Water! (Paperback)
Mrs. Lloyd offers a clever, witty, and humorous description of the challenges and blessings that make up the life of a homeschooling family. She provides excellent insight into how to create a holy Catholic environment within one's own family. Her motherly wisdom is valuable information for all (not just parents who homeschool their children). Reading this book brings you face to face with a family dedicated to holiness. We need more mothers who are willing to share the joys of their vocation. Thank you Mrs. Lloyd!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful gift, May 19, 2005

This review is from: Please Don't Drink the Holy Water! (Paperback)
This book gave me a chance to laugh at myself and the life I love as a homeschooling mom of six. It helped me to see the lighter side of it all, as well as letting me know that I'm not alone. Without any sitcoms out there to make fun of the stuff of being a large catholic homeschooling family, this is a much needed opportunity for us that are out there to laugh at things relevent in our lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Blessing for all types of families, January 18, 2005
This review is from: Please Don't Drink the Holy Water! (Paperback)
One of the best treats in life is the gift of laughter, and in this sense Susie Lloyd has given parents, grandparents, and anyone who spends a significant amount of time caring for children a great present - the ability to laugh at life! This wonderful book is highly readable...enjoy it a bit at a time or sit back a spend an afternoon giggling your way through the whole thing. Even though I'm not a homeschooler, and I have boys rather than girls, I recognized myself and my family in many of the vignettes that fill the pages of Susie Lloyd's book. I had a great time reading it and would highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious.....and so true!!!!, June 23, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Please Don't Drink the Holy Water! (Paperback)
This was THE BEST gift I could have ever gotten for my Mom for Mother's Day. She is a "graduate" of 21 years of homeschooling us. Even though she had only three girls spread far apart in age, she was practically rolling on the floor in helpless laughter as she saw how well it related to her friends who had much larger families. I sorta "borrowed" it to look at after I realized I let it slip through my fingers to her without getting a chance to read it....and now, with two toddlers and an infant and the prospect of homeschooling them (and undoubtedly some more!) I decided I had to buy this book for me now!!! I am waiting for a sequel!!! Susie Lloyd, you are the greatest!! Keep 'em coming! :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Ah, I've been there...!, June 16, 2006
This review is from: Please Don't Drink the Holy Water! (Paperback)
Even though I don't have five girls like the author of this book, I can relate to so much of what she describes. I really enjoyed the chapter on Home Improvement, where she bemoans having a husband who is great at Catholic apologetics but takes forever to get around to refinishing the kitchen cabinets, coming up with delay after delay .... "Finally, I produce a contract signed in blood..." Ha! The other stories, about her addiction to rock n'roll and her daydreaming about changing her supervan for a sports car were honest moments I think every other Gen X homeschooling mom could relate to. I truly enjoyed this book, and hope there's more coming from Susie Lloyd!

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Addition to My Top-Ten Favorites!, February 4, 2006

I can honestly say that this book now resides on my shelf of absolute favorites! I didn't just chuckle while reading this book, I guffawed, chortled and snickered my way through Susie Lloyd's Catholic homeschooling life, which so mirrors my own. Let's just say that the laundry, dishes and other household chores went unnoticed today, while I belly-laughed my way through the pages, joyfully oblivious to everything around me. Hmmm. Did I feed the kids today?!
