Please Don't Eat the Animals: All the Reasons You Need to Be a Vegetarian provides an impassioned explanation for the movement toward a planet-based diet in sections addressing issues of health, environment, animal welfare and spirituality alike. Given this four-point argument it's hard to refute the value of a guide which will hold appeal to a wide audience, especially those already following vegetarian path. Public libraries will thus find it a popular lend.

I read this book and cried. I had no idea how cruel we treat animals and how dreadful chickens are treated overall. I haven't been able to eat an egg since reading this book and have tears streaming down my face as I am writing this review. Meat, who needs it? That too is disgusting!

I was quite surprised how much very interesting information was in this book. I highly recommend this to anyone who has no idea how much goes on in the world of slaughtering animals, creating pollution and also how eating meat is really bad for us. Enlighten yourself and read this book. This will definatley make you think about becoming a vegetarian.

I Dare You . . .,

This review is from: Please Don't Eat the Animals: All the Reasons You Need to be a Vegetarian (Paperback)
I dare you to read this book and NOT seriously question your eating habits. As a happy meat-eater for 40 years, rarely thinking about where my food actually comes from, this little book was the source of an epiphany for me. Read it, and learn how to truly have an impact on our environment, the amount of compassion in our universe, and your own health.

Short, sweet and full of compelling, scientific data. If you are not ready to hear the truth, don't read this book. But if you are ready to change, live a healthier life and leave a smaller footprint on our planet, read this book...give it as a gift.

Some good information, but I can't help but feeling that the authors should have skipped section one ("The Healthy Vegetarian") and just stuck with sections two ("The Environmentally Conscious Vegetarian") and three ("The Compassionate Vegetarian").First, let's deal with the health section: Most of the "studies" are actually non-interventionist epidemiological observations of the pattern "vegetarians are more likely to have property X than non-vegetarians." Without controlling for diet alone, one cannot conclude that the property is causally linked to the exclusion of animal products; perhaps it's because vegetarians tend to be thinner or more health conscious in the first place. The section titled "Anatomy Lesson" is preposterous. The authors claim that our ancestors ate small amounts of meat infrequently. Then they essentially state that humans are herbivores because we have a "long and complex" colon and our teeth "resemble those of other plant eaters." In actual fact, humans are omnivores. Our digestive systems aren't adequate to break down and digest many plant materials and are short enough to allow for digestion of meat (especially when cooked). It's not an either/or proposition; humans evolved the ability to subsist on both plant and animal foods; to claim otherwise is to ignore most of human evolutionary history. There are many claims that vegetarians live longer. Unfortunately, lifestyle plays almost no factor in health and longevity after the age of 80. In fact, vegans' morality ratios have been demonstrated to be similar to those of meat eaters. In fact, if you're purely interested in decreasing mortality, it appears that being a fish eater is the most beneficial. Another study showed that vegetarians' death rates were similar to comparable non-vegetarians. It appears that other lifestyle factors, such as smoke, are much more important than diet alone. Vegetarians also tend to have higher advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) which may play an important adverse role in process of atherosclerosis, diabetes, aging and chronic renal failure. Finally, section four ("Spiritual and Religious Aspects of Vegetarianism") attempts to address various religious groups (most members of which consume meat) and use their religion to guide them to vegetarianism. I don't really see these as valid tactics, but perhaps these arguments are important to some; I think the book could have been complete without it. |
