Review

Please Don’t Stop the Music is a real gem of a story that completely caught me by surprise.

This is a book that will have you captivated to the end. The author described the characters and the secondary characters so well. So much, in fact, that I want to read another story about Rosie and Jason. I really loved this story.

Dear Ms. Lovering, Since I enjoyed the first book of yours I read, “Slightly Foxed,” I jumped at the chance to check out your latest release, “Please Don’t Stop the Music.” Your description of it as a ‘dark psychological romance – with jokes’ is dead on.

Please Don't Stop The Music by Jane Lovering is a novel I cannot put down. The book follows Jem as she finds her way through a maze of hidden pain from a very troubled life, from which she is trying to run, hiding the memories even from herself. Although she has sworn off of love and men, she meets an irresistible man who is skin and bones but who gives her a chance to sell the jewelry she makes in order to survive. They become friends and she learns of the dreadful pain he is hiding from the world and for which he has given up fame and fortune and become a recluse. The British characters in this book are delightful and fully, interestingly developed. Although the Brit slang is a few times a bit quirky to an American reader, it is fully understandable. The story is good all the way to the happy ending. I really enjoyed this one!

About the Author

JANE LOVERING was born in Devon, England but, following extradition procedures, now lives in Yorkshire.  She has five children, four cats, two dogs and doesn't believe in housework so the bacteria and dust are approaching sentience and now rank among the pets. Incidentally, she doesn't believe in ironing either, and the children all learned self-defensive cookery at early ages. She works in a local school and also teaches creative writing, which are extreme ways of avoiding the washing up. Jane is a member of the Romantic Novelists' Association and has a first class honours degree in creative writing. Jane writes romantic comedies which are often described as 'quirky'. One day she's going to find out what that means.

More About the Author

WINNER - ROMANTIC NOVEL OF THE YEAR 2012 with PLEASE DON'T STOP THE MUSIC (Choc Lit publishing)

Jane was, presumably, born, although everyone concerned denies all knowledge. However there is evidence that her early years were spent in Devon (she can still talk like a pirate under the right conditions) and of her subsequent removal to Yorkshire under a sack and sedation.

She now lives in North Yorkshire, where she writes romantic comedies and labours under the tragic misapprehension that Johnny Depp is coming for her any day now. She is prevented from running away to join either Johnny or a circus by her five children, four cats, two dogs and the day job, although she believes this to be optional, and blames her incipient love of sprouts for her slightly single status.

Jane's likes include marshmallows, the smell of cucumbers, words beginning with B, the smell of the understairs cupboard, and Doctor Who. She writes with her laptop balanced on her knees whilst lying on her bed, and her children have been brought up to believe that real food has a high carbon content. And a kind of amorphous shape.

Not unlike Jane herself, come to think of it.

Jemima Hutton needs to keep her past a secret. She knows if it gets out, her new friends wouldn't want anything to do with her. She is determined to build a successful life, and is having good luck with her jewelry making business, until her lucky streak ends. When she meets the reclusive Ben Davies at his guitar shop, she begs him to stock her jewelry, and he agrees. As Jemima and Ben's friendship grows, Jemima knows Ben is hiding a secret. He used to be a rock star, front man of a popular band and touring all over the world. Why is he now hiding out in a guitar shop, using a different name and pretending to not care about his past? But Ben also knows Jemima is hiding something, and as their friendship grows, the more Jemima becomes terrified her past will come out.

Please Don't Stop the Music by Jane Lovering was an eye-opening book. My favorite part of this novel is that the main character is so different from what I usually read. Her background is dirty, messy, heart-breaking. I love reading about strong woman, and Jemima captured my attention from the first chapter. The villain in the story plays a large part throughout, and Lovering effectively made me hate her then love her all within a very short amount of time. There was just one scenario in the book that I just could not give credit too, when the mystery father of Jemima's friend and roommate is announced. I won't give any spoilers here, but I couldn't really buy into that story. Other than that, the ending had me crying over the hard lessons the characters learned and the emotional turmoil they were going through, and I could feel the passion in the writing. A definite recommendation from me.

This book has far too few reviews. It has it all. . .flawed hero and heroine, ambivalence, fighting love no matter how obvious it is to the rest of the world, chivalrous hero. So, what is it folks? Is it because the author is English? All that means is that this book is better edited, has wittier, more realistic dialogue, and adult characters who behave in the ways you or I probably would in their circumstances. This read is a breeze, exactly what summer calls for. There's enough drama and angst to keep you engaged. You pick it up in the morning and by the time you are packing up your beach things, you have finished a great read and a great day.

I loved this book! By the first couple of chapters, I can usually tell exactly how a story's going to turn out. This one pleasantly surprised me; I had no idea what was wrong until it was revealed.

A thoroughly adult romance for readers who appreciate flawed characters and witty dialog. Ben isn't your typical hero but then Jemima is far from the traditional romance heroine - making them a perfect match if ever they can get past the secrets wearing them both down. I can't wait to read more from this talented author.

This was a really raw story of real people. Really well written. The characters with all of their flaws were interesting. Loved it!
