First of all, I am a long-time fan of Doren. I have subscribed to his How The World Works channel for over a year. I watched most of his videos, and I will continue to.

His book is logically sound; I agree with his thesis and most of his arguments. The author does support his claims with evidence. There are many benefits to reading this book, but rather writing what has already been said on the dozens of 5-star reviews (which would not have bettered anybody in any way), I will provide constructive criticism to the author and to let potential readers know what to expect from this product.

First of all, the book is very short. It will take no more than an hour to complete; it took me 34 minutes to complete it. Those who are expecting a full length book from 100-300 pages should now not be disappointed. At the same time, that is a good thing, as the author does not pad the book's length with talking points, irrelevant humor, anecdotes, or superficially useful information.

Essentially, I consider it more of a chain of blog posts than an actual book. There are many occasions where the author makes a very valid point, but rather than going in depth and explaining it in great detail, he simply moves on to the next topic.

The problem is that if you have watched many of Lee's videos or you are a very informed citizen, you probably already know at least 90% of what he writes in the book. I have not learned anything new from reading this personally.... I, and probably you, already know that universities and professors are of a left-wing bias, they do not tolerate dissent well,

This just seems more of an expansion pack for fans of the authors youtube channel (How The World Works) to acquire rather than a book I can recommend to everyone in college, as he keeps returning to his Youtube channel as the base for this entire work.

Of course, there are plenty of exceptions, but generally, I cannot see this book being enough to broaden the point of view of most liberals, even the most open minded ones. It is not a deep enough work to fundamentally change someone's views, even though it can stimulate thought. The book starts with the idea that Doren's views (or the views of libertarianism in general) are absolute truth, rather than starting at a ground of nuetrality and uncertainty and working its way up to it, which could repel liberals, or anyone disagreeing with his views.

Despite all of my criticism, the low price of one dollar is impossible to beat. I have no complaint about the value of this deal, especially considering this price. You can spend it on something that will mean nothing to you the next day such as a cup of coffee or a can of soda, or you can buy this book, which is intellectually stimulating.

Doren certainly has potential to become a great libertarian author of his time. I just hope his second project will be, in all aspects, bigger, and that his next work will be of full-length and have far more depth to it, and would expand beyond being fan service. Read more ›

Lee Doren of YouTube's HowTheWorldWorks writes an entertaining and intelligent account of his own journey from being a leftist "community organizer" to a libertarian media pundit. He talks about his own experiences in college and offers advice for getting through academia as a student.

For me, the most impressive part of the book was when he talks about how to deal with biased professors -- he explains how to stand up for your own ideas in a respectful way that neither sacrifices your integrity nor creates a dangerous enemy out of the professor. He also says that if a professor requires you to write an essay defending an idea you think is wrong, it'd be a good idea to do so as a useful debate-style exercise, rather than potentially martyr yourself. It's a quick read, and no one will miss the 99 cents it cost them.

I wasn't expecting to be blown away by this book, but as soon as I started reading I couldn't put it down. This book is amazing! Every college student should read this book. I'm only 2 weeks into college and I've already had my fair share of Marxist indoctrination (and I'm at the Baptist university Baylor University).

I'm so glad I read this book!

I am a senior in high school and I really enjoyed this. As a huge libertarian and follower of the Austrian School of Economics I was worried about going to college only to be really furious at all of my professors and their bias. But now I have a better peace of mind and now I feel much more confident for my next year at college. I recommend to all seniors in High School, the best part of it is the reading list at the end. 5 stars all the way!

As a libertarian senior in high school, I have been warned about ways to avoid indoctrination from a plethora of other authors. Nobody has done a better job at outlining the problems of liberal indoctrination in higher level education than Lee Doren. I would recommend this book to anybody: students in or eventually entering college, parents, and teachers alike can all gain from his work.

As a freshman experiencing college for the first time, I can say that I have already experienced many of the things explained in this book. I'm happy that I chose to read this because it helped me see how important it is to challenge my professors. I strongly recommend this book to any college student.

Thank you very much for a great read. The book is straight to the point and gives many real life examples that illuminate the state of higher education in America today.

I might not be Lee's intended audience but I still enjoyed this book immensely. I have been subscribing to HowTheWorldWorks YouTube channel and that is how I found out about this book. Most of all I am grateful for being exposed to the genius of Thomas Sowell. I bought "Basic Economics" by Thomas Sowell immediately after finishing this one.

More About the Author

Lee Doren graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in Communications and received his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law. He is licensed to practice law in Illinois and the District of Columbia. He is currently employed at Craft | Media / Digital.

In December 2008, Lee launched the YouTube channel "HowTheWorldWorks." Since then, it has become one of the largest "News and Politics" channels on YouTube with more than 35,000 subscribers and 6.1 million views.
