Book Description

July 4, 2008
Please God Save Us is a book of art and words written by internationally known artist Derek Hess and Cleveland politician Kent Smith. Initially created as an avenue for Hess to vent his frustration with the current administration, the work then became a one-night only art show in Hess hometown of Cleveland and got such a strong response it seemed natural to want to share it with people of all political and religious denominations. The book addresses a variety of topics including: the Republican Party, the Christian right, America s foreign policy, the environment, the Iraq War, stem cell research, evolution, rock and roll, the Fox News channel, Sponge Bob and Santa Claus. Please God Save Us is intended to educate and inspire its readers whether or not they agree with either the art or the words. The book is not, however, meant to be an attack on Christianity but rather an interpretation of how religion is perverted to fit the needs of its followers, whomever they may be.

About the Author

Internationally-known artist Derek Hess has spent the past fifteen years creating rock poster art that has not only made him a household name, but has also caught the attention of both the Louvre and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame where his work is featured in both institutions permanent collections. After years of creating posters and flyers for well-known bands such as Deftones, Thursday, Every Time I Die and Taking Back Sunday, as well as popular fine art, Hess diverged into creating witty and thought-provoking art that pushes the envelope of societal ideals. Hess, along with Kent Smith, an award-winning Cleveland politician, have joined forces to create Please God Save Us. Smith has written for the Cleveland Free Times and is currently a PhD candidate in the Economic Development program at Cleveland State University. Before running for office, Smith worked as a community organizer for Democratic campaigns in seven states and has been friends with Derek Hess for years.

5.0 out of 5 stars JImmy Buffett, Slayer, Cheney, Gore etc., October 15, 2008

We're all irritated with the Country and Christian Right telling us how to vote on Proposition 8, but do we say anything about more than "this sucks"? Fortunately, Kent Smith can, and does so in an educated, rational manner, addressing everything such as Dick Cheney's Halliburton debacle, the cost per day of the Iraq war, the perversion of Christianity's original message, reasons behind the continual veto of Stem Cell Research and lighter topics such as why Santa and SpongeBob were blacklisted and Jimmy Buffett ties with Slayer on the evil scale. More than just a complement, Derek Hess's brilliantly messy and melancholic Ashley Wood meets Bill Sinkiewicz style paintings (his frequent icon is a morbid Red Elephant), sketches and collages appear on each page, echoing Smith's words (and vice-versa). If the publishers of Ad Busters worked in cohesion and employed a sh**-hot illustrator, the result would be this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great art- sketchy rhetoric., January 12, 2009

This review is from: Please God Save Us (Perfect Paperback)
The art in this book is fabulous & worthy of a more substantial, coffee table type publication. I just want to warn the buyer that this book is way more about politics than Hess' actual drawings. This was a very effective way for the author & artist to share thier opinions about recent events. Now, however, I would like to see a book that showcases a broader spectrum of this artist's incredible work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Art, Great Book, August 25, 2008
This review is from: Please God Save Us (Perfect Paperback)
Having been a fan of Hess's art for years, it is great to have a collection of his work in print. This book showcases his art in an interesting format, with a narrative that will make you think. It's not just pretty pictures, it's some power packed imagery that acts as a visual tour guide to some of the points coming across in the text. It's also an interesting story how Hess came to create this work, and his personal notes are insightful. The books is put together and paced very well. Now that I have had a taste of a collection, I am now ready for the full on retrospective of Derek's work, Bring it.
