Gr 3-5--A fictionalized account of Florence Nightingale's achievements that trivializes them to a degree. Ross deftly describes his subject's commitment and passion to care for the sick and realistically reports the conditions under which she had to work during the Crimean War. The narrative describes her accomplishments and sense of purpose, but children may not realize that this is fiction and not biography, and adding fictional dialogue detracts from the book's worth. There are gaps in detail as well. Readers are told that Nightingale always wanted to become a nurse, but there is no mention of how this was accomplished at the time. Dorothy Turner's Florence Nightingale (Watts, 1986; o.p.) is a better choice in that it gives a much more thorough picture of the woman's life and is written in lively prose suitable for young audiences. Its accompanying illustrations by Richard Hook outdo Shields's pen-and-ink cartoons.
