Book Description

This first book of a wacky middle-grade mystery series opens with sixth-grader Roland "WeeWee" Weedervich horrified by catching his electronic-hat-wearing grandma showing off her artificial leg to unsuspecting shoppers at the mall. The trouble is, the unsuspecting shoppers just happen to be the snobbiest and most popular kids from Roland’s school. Fortunately for him, and unfortunately for her, Crystal Nellson’s problems are even worse. Despite his ongoing difficulties with juvenile diabetes, the illegal antics of his bad-mannered beagle, and the embarrassing escapades of "the planet’s most bizarre family," Roland is rewarded with true friendship as he helps Crystal solve "The Case of the Sacked Potatoes."

Reading level: age 9 and up

Editorial Reviews

Review

....a hilarious middle-grade novel...with useful information about diabetes. Kallevig tells a truly funny tale. We give: FIVE HEARTS. -- Heartland Reviews, April/May/June issue, Reader: Judy Schuler

About the Author

Christine Petrell Kallevig has been a professional storyteller and published author since 1991. Many of her books combine origami with stories, a technique she calls, "Storigami." She makes frequent visits to schools and libraries nationwide, telling stories and folding paper. When she’s home in Ohio, she spends most of her time chasing her rambunctious beagle, Kirby, who’s only slightly better behaved than Roland’s dog, Nose. During the rare moments when Kirby is quiet and not trying to escape into the woods behind her house, Christine invents new storigami stories and writes middle-grade fiction. 5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book!, February 21, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Please Pass Grandma's Leg - AKA: The Case of the Sacked Potatoes (Paperback)
The author, Christine Kallevig, visited my school so I bought a book so she'd autograph it. This book is so funny, but kind of sad, too. I don't have diabetes like Roland, but kids pick on me, too. I hate it, too! But I don't think Roland is picked on because of his diabetes. He's just not popular and he worries about it too much. A girl who goes to my school has diabetes and no one minds, except she doesn't like all the testing all the time. I'm glad that my dog does what we tell him to do, but I like Nose, anyway, even though he's such a pain. I want to read the next Nose and Me book when it comes out. My mom hates the title of this book, but I love it!
