This review is from: Please Please Please... Plus (Audio CD)
The original 16 tracks are presented here, plus several bonus cuts of the '56/'57 period.
A well-written, conscientious essay by Ricitchioe Unterberger, is found in an attractive booklet, though, he dismisses the 1991 to 2002 JB releases as being not really comparable to the earlier stuff - but these five CDs were certainly better than several from his '50s to '70s group. (He mentions only three of them). And these CDs contained alot more creativity than found on many of the Federal sides: as fine as they all are, they are highly derivative in most cases. (Of Hank Ballard, especially). But geeting down the actual CD here, we have his great commercial breakthrough, "Please, Please, Please", followed by many which didn't chart. Of course, "the charts" had a limited number of slots for R & B in the '50s, so we can't really gauge which ones might be considered "flops". Although it must be said that Syd Nathan, the President of Federal/King Records, reportedly came close to dropping James Brown And The Famous Flames. (A tune called "Try Me" put an end to that line of thinking). Notes have no recording dates, just location and personnel. The "recorded in 1957" note doesn't apply to all. |
