there are no bad dogs,
By Mike (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Please, Puppy, Please (Hardcover)
(I have to write reviews for a class I'm in so here's mine for this book):
Kids love puppies and puppies love trouble. Please, Puppy, Please follows a brother and sister and their new and highly mischievous puppy. Inside, the puppy tears up newspaper and makes a mess. Outside, the puppy escapes, gets chased by the children, roles in the mud and makes a mess. After his bath, the puppy shakes water on everyone, and makes a mess. The story is very simplistic but not simple. There is only one sentence on each page but anyone who has ever tried to raise a puppy will instantly know how complex each of those sentences can be with a stubborn puppy. The text follows a poetic structure of having the children wanting the puppy to do something followed by puppy please, please, please (or something similar). The puppy wants nothing to do with these requests, wishing to create his own fun. Fans of the Lees' other book Please, Baby, Please will instantly recognize the same warm illustrations provided by Kadir Nelson. Nelson's soft colors add to the welcoming feel of this book. For all of the troubles that puppies cause to everyone around them, the last few pages show exactly why people willingly go through all this trouble- the friendship and affection that can only be provided by a loving pet.

Please, read it, please!,
By Britta L. Gregor Krabill "Warrior Librarian" (Boynton Beach, FL, USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Please, Puppy, Please (Hardcover)
As a youth services librarian, I am responsible for the toddler storytime and I'm constantly searching for books that work well with large groups. This book is perfect. Even young ones who are scared of dogs can appreciate the joy of a wet, curious puppy.
The repetition and rhythm keeps the kids engaged while the large, playful pictures are easy to share even when my group is huge. The illustrations are some of the best I've seen. The puppy's nose looks like it would be wet if you touched the page, and the children are full of life and motion. I plan to use this book as often as I can and I will be purchasing a copy for my personal library.

Delightful book for toddlers,

I love this book, but not as much as Please Baby Please and it may be because we are not dog owners. Nevertheless, my [...] loves this book. Like me, he favors Please Baby more. He may like this book because he recognizes the similarities between the two. That said, we delight in the puppy's antics and read this book often.

Please, Puppy, Please is about two kids that have a puppy and they want to play with him, but the puppy keeps doing silly things. They try to give him a bath, but he runs from the tub. The puppy finally stops running and being silly.
I liked the book. I really liked the puppy and the way he kept playing. I liked the pictures too! Reviewed by: Jada Monet, 7 years old

Please, more Please,

This was the first book that I bought from the series by Spike Lee and his wife. I fell in love just with the front cover and although you can't judge a book by that, I did and it payed off.
This book was for my 3 year old cousin and I read it on the way to his house, I loved the illustrations and thought the story was great, I would continue to buy this series although the price I thought was a bit too much for a children's book.

Gorgeous illustrations; stupid and annoying text,
By Mom in Bay Area (Redwood City, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Please, Puppy, Please (Paperback)
The illustrations are just gorgeous and I love that the main characters are African-American children. The only reason I decided not to buy this book after reading it at a friend's is the incredibly annoying and repetitive text. I think I would just go crazy reading this over and over to my toddler. I wish the text were better thought out because if it were, this book would be such a winner.

BIG Thumbs Up!,

My overly active 20 month old loves this book and will sit still quietly for an entire reading...until we finish at which point she will throw a tantrum because the story is over. The illustrations are beautiful and captivating and the rhythm of the text is delightful. My next purchase will be "Please, Baby, Please." Great work, Lees. I will be keeping my eye out for more from you guys in the future.

So much fun!,
By Robin Elise Weiss "Robin Elise Weiss, LCCE, F... (Louisville, KY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Please, Puppy, Please (Hardcover)
I bought this book as a fun loving book for my 3 year olds to enjoy a book about dogs, since they are afraid. As we would sit down and read it they were enjoying it, but along came the baby to sit and read with us. Then came the big sister who is learning to read to help read some of the pages...before long it was a family book. The pictures are delighful and really pull you in. The kids loved the repetitive phrase and it doesn't seem out of line with them. This is now a standard birthday gift. We have also recently gotten then Please, Baby, Please and enjoy it equally.

My son got this book when he was about a year old, and it has been in his top 5 favorites for the past year. It's a cute story, and the illustrations are really wonderful.
