Book Description

Today's Issues March 15, 1999

Formal and comtemplative services in vast cathedrals are as much a part of Christian worship today as casual and boisterous services in refurbished warehouses. Yet this very diversity raises the question, Are all forms of worship equally pleasing to God?

Worship wars have erupted over so many issues--musical styles and liturgical formats, as well as more serious concerns like whether or not to orient services toward seekers--that often the spirit of the age has silenced the Spirit of Christ and left us wondering what is acceptable in God's eyes.

This booklet guides believers in recovering biblical worship. It will help you think about what pleases God, evaluate worship from a biblical point of view, and restore Him to the center of our worship, where He belongs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A refreshingly biblical approach to worship, August 3, 2000
By
David Atkins (Wichita, KS United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pleasing God in Our Worship (Today's Issues) (Paperback)
This is a wonderfully balanced, even-handed approach to the "worship wars" and debate over styles used in worship services. The small book is remarkably free from personal preferences and challenges the reader to examine biblical foundations in formulating opinions and thoughts concerning contemporary worship, especially as it relates to a return to God-centeredness in worship. Its direction and instruction may not be popular with those who prefer a market-driven, pole-oriented approach to what worship should look like, but its scholarship will be evident to all who read it. This is classic James Boice at his direct and insightful best.

This review is from: Pleasing God in Our Worship (Today's Issues) (Paperback)
Dr. Robert Godfrey has an unusal gift of making history and theology come alive in ways that the common church-goer can fully appreciate and understand. This short work is no exception. While many books on worship are written to justify the author's personal preference, this one seeks to develop a usable Biblical theology of worship. Many very sincere believers think that apart from calling us to worship, that the Bible doesn't have too much to say about how we ought to praise God. With short to the point sections, Dr. Godfrey unfolds a rich world of Biblical understanding about the character of New Testament worship. This book is a great introduction for those just starting to think through the real issues of worship. A must read for pastors, church leaders and interested laymen that desire to offer up praise and worship that is truly pleasing to God. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasing God Indeed, August 2, 2005

Written from a Reformed perspective, so God is considered in His worthiness, not just His love. Gives concise information on worship and what pleases God, not what feels good. Well worth the price.
