5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Read Aloud
I read this book last year to 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th graders and just finished reading it to this year's 2nd grade. The kids enjoyed figuring out what Uncle Arvie was talking about. Even though we only read it once a week the students remembered, talked about, and were very anxious for library day so we could read more. It is a touching love story, a not so scary ghost...

It is a touching love story, a not so scary ghost story, but most of all a very funny book. Unlike some other reviewers I recommend this book to students from 2nd grade up. Also I would say that it IS as well written as Creeches other books, just written for a younger audience. I'm hoping that she will write more about Dennis and his visiting ghosts. When I finished it today I made a waiting list to read it and over half of the kids signed up. I guess I need a few more copies. Find some kids and read it to them, it will be fun for all of you!

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Pleasing the Ghost (Paperback)
If you have ever had a ghost come through your window, you can relate to Dennis. He is a regular nine-year old boy, but odd things happen to him, like he get's visted by ghosts. But the main ghost is his Uncle Arvie, who asked for three pleases, (meaning three favors.) While doing the three pleases, one more promblem gets in the way. The school bully, Billy doesn't belive he can see ghosts, and he must show him before Billy breakes all the window's in his house! All the three pleases have somthing to do with Uncle Arvie's wife. A painting unfinised, digging up his wife's favorite roshbush, and a sweet poem. Now, if this sounds like a good book to you, you can get it under Sharon Creech Pleasing the Ghost at your local libary. What are you doing just sitting around? Go get it!

Have you ever met death? Dennis has. In Sharon Creech's book Pleasing the Ghost, Dennis learns how to over come his father's and uncle's death. Dennis, a nine year old boy, is seeing ghosts and has actually met them, but his mother doesn't believe him. When Uncle Arvie's ghost appears Dennis starts talking to him. Uncle Arvie wants three things, and they all have to do with his wife, Julia, Dennis's aunt, because he misses her so much. Sharon Creech describes how Uncle Arvie moves in very little detail and yet still gets it out to you.. At the end of the book Dennis changes because he knows that he is very thankful for meeting his Uncle's ghost.. You will find out what happens if you read Pleasing the Ghost by Sharon Creech.
As you can see the conflict in this book is Dennis vs. death.

I give this book a three star rating because it wasn't as descriptive as I thought it would be and I like to really picture what is going on in my head

3.0 out of 5 stars A Story about a Boy and Some Ghosts, November 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pleasing the Ghost (Paperback)
I liked this book "Pleasing the Ghost" because this and "Casper" are the only books I've read about ghosts. I liked how Uncle Arvie spoke because he spoke his own language and it was funny. I didn't like the part when Uncle Arvie flew somewhere and Dennis did not know where he went, so Dennis felt pretty sad. I would also be sad if my Uncle flew somewhere and I didn't know where.

The main characters are Bo, Aunt Julia, Billy, Uncle Arvie and Dennis. My favorite character is Bo. Are you wondering who Bo is? bo is a dog--a very small, brown dog. He is my favorite character because I love dogs. Another character that I liked was Uncle Arvie because if you tried to understand him it was hard. You would have to write all of his special words so you wouldn't forget! Some of the words that Uncle Arvie said were "Beany Booger" which meant that Uncle Arvie did not like the person. "Dinosaur" meant "Dennis" and "foodle a doodle" meant that a boy could only see a ghost when he wanted a ghost. "Heartfoot" meant Aunt Julia. "Philanplop" meant I can't steer and "Pepperoni" meant Dad.

I did not like the part when Billy threw a rock at Dennis's window and it shattered in his room on the floor. The problem in the book was that Billy didn't believe that Dennis could see ghosts. I don't see how anyone can see ghosts because they are really fake. All they are, are see-through dead people. Billy and Dennis solved the problemby talking to each other about ghosts and then Billy told Dennis that he could also see ghosts because his Dad was also dead.

I would recommend this book to a grade 3-4-5 because i am in grade 5.

I would rate this book a 3/5 because it was a pretty good book.

THE END!

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the greatest books, June 25, 2001

I think this book was phenemenal. It is about a "regular" boy who encounters a ghoast. unfortunutly this wasn't what he really wanted, although he does have an interest in this peculiar ghost. I would encourage kids to read this book. I am 11 years old.

It is a cute story, but just not what I expected from a Sharon Creech book. Her books have always left me with something to really think about and this was just "something to read".

2.0 out of 5 stars Pleasing the Ghost, May 10, 2010

(VINE VOICE)

I understand that this book is for younger readers, but I did feel like it was not a very well-written book. It reels the reader in with short, snappy sentences and a catchy concept--a boy who can talk to ghosts. It's an overly simplified plot, but again, just a kid's book. I did wonder, while reading, if kids would be patient enough to put up with Uncle Arvie's unique speech patterns. I was also highly unsettled in reading and seeing such a strong emphasis put on money in a children's book. That's not really something I want kids to prize... I don't know. The whole book seems rushed, unresolved, and disconnected. It's just not much of a story, but it for younger readers, so some of this would probably not be so unsettling to them. I do know Creech is capable of putting together a much better quality story for children, as she's done in the past, so I think I would just wait until the kids were a little older and let them read Creech's much better works like Absolutely Normal Chaos and Walk Two Moons.

Pleasing
The Ghost
By: Josh, Zane, Brooks, and Bailey

Pleasing The Ghost was an OK book. Dennis, a young boy has had many ghost encounters but not one has been a family member. When Uncle Arvie blows through Dennis' window, he has three pleases to ask of. Because Uncle Arvie has had a stroke, Dennis must decode the pleases to complete them. Dennis is also having problems, with a mean kid named Billy Baker. This book was written by the Newberry Honor Award winning author Sharon Creech. This book takes you on a magical adventure that will bring your loved ones to you.
