Portrait of a Loser,
By Bold Gray Mare (Lake Superior, MI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Pleasure of Being Robbed (Ws) (DVD)
Nice camera work, visually interesting and a fine sound track. This unsophisticated film will delight film buffs, kleptomaniacs and advocates of redistribution-of-wealth theory alike. However I found the sympathetic portrayal of an impulsive and immature gamine, Eleanor (who steals other people's belongings for kicks), vaguely repugnant. She opportunistically preys on her random victims, even establishing a fleeting rapport with them as she steals their prized possessions.
Watching her go from one klepto fix to another was like watching a slow motion wreck--compelling, shocking, sad. The viewer is along for her thrill-seeking ride. After she steals what looks like a diaper bag from a father unloading luggage from a taxi, we discover it contains family pets. Eleanor rejects the lively young dog (kicking it out of her apartment) but keeps its kitten companions. Her lack of concern for the pup she abandons typifies her callous, self-centered behavior. The viewer gradually loses hope that Eleanor will make a change for the better. It's disheartening. If "The Pleasure of Being Robbed" meant to depict the callowness of urban youth, it succeeds. But I disliked it, a lot. |
