ABSOLUTE PLEASURE!, December 28, 1999
This review is from: Pleasure (Audio CD)
A gem that is finally back in print, Girls At Our Best's Pleasure, originally released in 1981, IS a true pleasure! The vocals are the sweetest, high-pitched pop (which cannot be compared to any other band in existence), while the music is post-punk at it's best - choppy guitar and heavy bass hooks (think Gang of Four without the politics or Delta 5 with a more pop than punk edge). Hopefully the CD includes all their non-LP singles, which are also notable. After 1981, Girls At Our Best! disappeared only to be found in the used bins. Hopefully this reissue will keep them in existence doing what they do best for much, much longer!

Interesting New Discovery, September 20, 2001
This review is from: Pleasure (Audio CD)
This is an interesting item I was just recently turned on to recently (by amysamm, see her list, she rocks). Interesting because just when I thought I knew everything about punk and new wave girl bands, here comes another. Interesting because their approach is so different. Their first single (the first two tracks on this cd) is a brilliant slice of post-punk that reminds me of the best work of the Slits, Kleenex/Liliput, Delta 5, Raincoats, Au Pairs, etc. Their sound changed dramatically over the course of one track however, into a super fluffy bubblegum punk-pop that at times recalls the Vaselines and their vocalist Frances McKee. The formula is less successful than the Vaselines but still remains entertaining. Aside from their first single, I wouldn't nessecarily claim this group to be essential, but for people like myself with a genuine interest in women in rock in the late70's/early 80's this is a document of work that will find a happy home within your collection.

One of my old school faves, November 14, 2006
This review is from: Pleasure (Audio CD)
I have this on vinyl, and it still remains one of my desert island faves after 25 years. Just lovely, and "too big fo ryour boots" is an anthem for the wayward new wavers of 2 decades ago.
