5.0 out of 5 stars Superb performance and thrilling interpretations.
The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet continues in their tradition of approaching music of many genres from all eras with this impressive addition to their list of fine recordings. From their exciting renditions of some of Bach's Brandenburg Concerti to the festive Monteverdiani, the L.A.G.Q. substantiate my faith in the guitar as a formidable concert instrument.

3.0 out of 5 stars Medievalish
This CD is good. My parents listen to it. I think it's interesting to listen to. It's sort of soothing too. It is simple music, so it's nice to listen to. I recommend this CD for people who like classical without the piano, because this CD is guitar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just lovely!, November 27, 2002
This review is from: For Thy Pleasure (Audio CD)
The rich, mellow strains of four virtuoso guitarists playing together is both relaxing and intriguing. It is refreshing to hear these Baroque favorites rendered by the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet with a different texture and timbre that one normally hears. All four players--John Dearman, Scott Tennant, Bill Kanengiser and Andrew York--master their parts with incredible agility. This quartet is not above having a little fun with their subject matter too; their encore rendition of Pachelbel's famous canon incorporates percussion and interprets the piece in a variety of modern styles, taking full advantage of the adaptability of their instruments.

This is quite the collection of Baroque compositions played and recorded superbly by this quitar quartet.

From such exquisite works such as parts of the Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 to Handel's Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, they pull the transposition to strings with dignity and quality of the music.

The Monteverdianna piece is superb in its chamber quality, touched by its would seem court jester type style. It is delightful in its upbeat transitions. The Telemann work for violin quarter is marvelous done on guitars, especially the Vivace which spins and darts around on one's ears with zeal and passion!

The closing Pachelbel "Loose Canon" is a soft, soothing rendition of this fabulous Baroque composition which looms among the all-time classics!

LAGQ is definitely top-notch! Definitely this is superb example of classical guitar well-done in the Baroque era.

5.0 out of 5 stars baroque music as music for the soul, June 19, 2002

baroque music is one of the most soothing of genres when well played. this cd collection is well played. purcell's rondeau evokes images of the power of the genre and is my favourite.

for those who are just starting to appreciate classical music, begin with pachelbel's "loose" canon and go from there. this rendition is brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Thy Pleasure: Yeap, It is Very Enjoyable, October 24, 2006

For the first time, I listened to LAGQ from Vermont Public Radio while I came back home. After listening to "Little Fugue In G Minor", I could not get it out of my mind. I like the original version of Bach's organ music but the LAGQ version gave me a different feeling of music: True melancholy.
Buying the cd gave me a lot of joyful time. All the music in the cd were excellent. I believe there are a lot of musicians who are techically perfect but only a few of them can give me this kind of pleasure. All the music are beautiful and graceful. On top of that all of them are absolutely enjoyable.

Please try the last track, "Canon In D: The Pachelbel 'Loose' Cannon" when you are blue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just amazing playing!, May 16, 2005
This review is from: For Thy Pleasure (Audio CD)
This cd is great, the repertoire isn't played very much, and these four gentlemen play it so well! My personal favorite track on the disc is the "loose" cannon! Just a fun arrangement of one of the most popular classical songs of all time, and it's virtuosic in every way! Another great CD. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars After few times I suddenly said WOW!, January 30, 2001

Some times ago I got this CD, I admit that at first I didn't think it is so good, but after a while - well, all I can tell you is that you really have to listent to this magnificent achievment of those four great artists. There are few tracks I would remove - but not because they are not good. I would remove them because personally I wouldn't give part of a whole piece like the Allegro from the 3 Brendenburg concerto or the 3 fugue from the "well tempered clavier" (where is the prelude?) however, the Los Angeles Guitar Quarter play so fluently, so sencitively... listen and admire! Especially I would like to note the 6 Brendenburg Concerto, the Handel's "The arrival of the queen of Sheba" and the Monteverdiana. I warmly recomand this cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great revelation of Bach and the Baroque, December 31, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A great revelation of Bach and the Baroque that I first discovered in 1999 on the old Napster. I'm still downloading MP3s but now they are not the broken and damaged ones! Fantastic music. You friends will want to know more about this and find it fascinating as you will. It lasts really well. Enjoy!
