Your Pleasure Map is a tour de force of sexual education and empowerment for women to understand, communicate, and maximize their pleasure. Author Shanna Katz makes it clear from the get-go that this book is for all women - heterosexual, queer, bisexual, cisgender, transgender, etc. - and for all levels of experience. Each chapter features three different tiers of engagement or three different topics on the same subject, making it easy for beginners and seasoned kinksters alike to skip to what interests them (for example, the chapter on the G-spot and female ejaculation features 3 hilariously titled sections: Entering the Cave of Wonders, Discovering the G, G-spot Experts). The reader can easily skip around or devour the entire book in one sitting. Katz takes the reader on a date - starting with how to plan the perfect date to suit your dating style and how to set the tone of the evening, moving on to different types of foreplay, slowly working her way to more advanced date activities including, but not limited to: sexting, orgasms, sex toys, female ejaculation, sensory play, anal sex, strap-on sex/pegging, floggers, rope, and more.

Your Pleasure Map is a great, all-around guide to sex and learning more about what turns you on and gives you pleasure and how to own that pleasure. The book is written in a fun, inviting tone and is full of silly puns and cute phrases like the “mattress mambo” to put the reader at ease. It certainly helps to make sex sound less clinical (as it often sounds in textbooks) and less daunting (as the bedroom is often a place where many insecurities and vulnerabilities come to light). Katz does a great job of dispelling common myths when it comes to sex (e.g.

Veteran sex educator Shanna Katz has written a fantastic primer for women who want to learn about pleasure and sex. As she points out in the introduction, a lot of the sex tips readily accessible to women who may or may not be sex ed savvy tend to “restate the same few tips that focus almost solely on the man’s pleasure (and they tend to be very heterocentric).” Don’t let the blonde svelte white woman on the cover fool you: this is a manual for everyone who identifies as a woman. The writing does not make assumptions about race, shape, size, number of partners, or partners’ gender; it’s welcoming to all women.

Culturally, when we talk about sex, we often jump straight to positions and body parts as if writing plays for a playbook. Katz starts out with a chapter on romantic dates, and covers topics from the technical (female ejaculation, how to deal with piercings in a variety of situations, how to choose sex toys) to the personal (communication skills, what stimulates your senses, what turns you on). While each topic is not covered in much depth, the manual has a great deal of breadth, and allows the reader to casually explore many facets of the human sexual experience. Furthermore, the manual is written in a quippy, magazine-quiz style that allows for casual browsing. To an extent, I think this book could be a subversive gift for women who read Cosmopolitan to get their sex tips, or who are both interested in and afraid of sex. One of the things the book emphasizes is personal preference: in each chapter, there are several sections with a “choose-your-own-adventure” style header, so that you can read about exactly what you like, and read through some options of other sexual styles that you might be curious about.

In Pleasure Map, Shanna Katz tackles the difficult task of covering the gamut of female sexuality's potential preferences, orientations, and challenges. Katz does achieve inclusivity, or as much as one can within the scope of one book; however, this achievement obviously requires that the book be more general and high level than one devoted to a narrow and specific topic.

You may not get step-by-step and a diagram on how to safely hog-tie your partner, but you will be at least introduced to the idea and pointed in the direction of more information. Consider this book a map (haha) to start deeply delving into your sexuality; it doesn't detail out the journey, but it does help you find the start.

As a beginner, Pleasure Map shows you the vast sexual terrain from which you have to choose, allowing you an introduction to the variety so you can better see what turns you on. As someone more familiar with the genre, the book still contained some fascinating gems for me and also served to remind and rekindle an array of forgotten ideas.

Pleasure Map is designed in a "choose your own adventure" format, which in itself conjured happy nostalgia for me. The construction allows you to skim and hop around the topics at your preference and leisure, making it an easy read and a helpful quick reference. If you read the book cover to cover, you will be saturated with knowledge, but you may feel a bit beaten over the head by Katz's frequent (and legitimate) reminders about the value of lubrication and communication.

As an author, Katz is also an easy read. Her voice is relaxed and very deliberately non-judgmental. She approaches the spectrum of sexual topics with a fluency and humor that neutralizes any taboo or stigma one might associate with them. The blatant puns and her parenthetical asides made me laugh to myself more than once.

Pleasure Map is worth adding to one's bookshelf, Kindle, bedside table, dungeon...wherever!
