Book Description

September 1984 Neglected Books of the Twentieth Century
Published when he was only twenty-five, this book consists of stories, sketches, and thematic writings on a variety of subjects. They reflect the characteristics of fin-de-siecle Paris, yet are illumined with the unique touches of observation and analysis Proust was to perfect in his later works. The perfect introduction to Proust and the longer work.""--Punch

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Time and time again, even in this apprentice work, one is made aware of Proust’s uncanny ability to extract emotional significane from the natural world, an ability in which he excels even Hardym Turgenev and Lampedusa."  —Scotsman

4.0 out of 5 stars A fine (but slightly incomplete) translation, January 1, 2009

I haven't had a chance to read this early work by Marcel Proust yet, but if you're interested in buying a copy, it's worth knowing that while A.N. Wilson, translator of the Hesperus Press edition, reports having used "with profit" this "fine translation" by Louise Varese, this edition does not include the poems entitled "Portrits of Painters and Musicians", but the Hesperus Press edition does so. Also included in the Hesperus Press edition but missing from this one are translations of the preface by Anatole France, and the dedication to Willie Heath.
