This album is what you would have if Frank Zappa joined Radiohead. Like a freezing shot of Jager, the music is ultra smooth, ultra chill, yet the delightfully wacky lyrics give 'Pleetch' a flavor unlike any other. With at least 8 very strong tracks just sit back and pop this in for instant awesomeness. "Yes", "Epiphany", "Man in the House", "Slippin'", and of course "Lotion" are absolutely amazing. The last third of the CD does end kind of weakly in my opinion but tracks 1-7 and 10 make it way more than worth it. Do yourself a favor and pick this up some way or other-- you won't regret it.

Greens Keepers - Pleetch,
This review is from: Pleetch (Audio CD)
Bizarro housers Greenskeepers offer a second album of leftfield dance music, PLEETCH. The overall mood here is more downtempo than their previous offering, THE ZIGGY FRANKLEN RADIO SHOW, as evidenced by the R&B vibe of "You Don't Know Me" and "Epiphany." On the other hand, "Back in the Wild," with its easygoing vibe, seems to draw more on 70s psychedelic pop than anything else. "Man in the House" injects some rock into the album, replete with some tongue-in-cheek lyrics, and "Slippin'" finally gets to the house we've been waiting for. "Filipino Phil" (and its corresponding house mix) is completely weird -- in a good way. The second half of the album sets it back into house territory, a marked contrast to what's come before. "Get It" sparkles with some jazzy horns, while "Dots" takes on the jazz full-bore. And "Sailing," a cover of the Christopher Cross song, could have come off an adult contemporary album. The schizophrenia nature of this album may be off-putting to some, but how can one not love the "Silence of the Lambs"-inspired lunacy of "Lotion"? The Greenskeepers are nothing if not individual.

I originally was turned on to the Greenskeepers through a friend who heard the song "Lotion." It is a great song, a good beat and clever lyrics, with a morbid undertone. It is written from the point of view of "Buffalo Bill" in the movie "Silence of the Lambs." It is a dark and morbid song, and a great diversion from the "American Idol" pop music foisted upon the public as "art." The rest of the songs are electronica club music. There is one other okay song on the album, "Man in the House." It again has a good beat and good vocals, but has repititious lyrics. If it had two more songs just as good as the ones I mentioned, I would give it 4 stars. The only reason I gave it three was the gem, "Lotion."

I first heard "Back In the Wild" on my favorite Grey's Anatomy episode "Pink Mist" (think bomb squad repercussions if you haven't seen it!) Anyhoo, the scene was intense and the song was perfect. Much to my extremely pleasant surprise, the entire CD is AMAZING!!!! I love a great unexpected pleasure in music, this is certainly one.

Aside from the references to the The Silence of the Lambs on one track - something that has enabled media air play, the other tracks are a rocking chilling little environment - something that has enabled myself to get through the Thornbury days - I first found this little gem after walking back from a BBQ from Nat's house after eating too many hash cookies - not the ones on your computer and it has been a chilling staple since...Hence in those times on a Sunday afternoon waking up at 2 and eating eggs for breakfast - this is a little gem that can get you through the time of sobriety... until you chow down the next noochiod... ;)

I buy music because its got pleasant lyrics, catchy lyrics, a good beat, or maybe I have to have it because its by my favorite band. I don't buy for the artiste content.Pleetch wasn't for me. Lotion is the only decent song on the CD; its memorable and catchy but it can't make up for the rest. The other songs are weak and the lyrics forgettable. Imagine the phone book read to music, but very very quietly and without passion. That about sums up the rest of the songs. At one point I found myself wishing the volume on my player went to 11 so I could get some life out of this CD! Very disappointing. Save your money or buy something else. |
