First let me say that I've tried numerous apps to stream music and video. There was always an issue that made the apps less than stellar. Plex gives me 99% of what I want!

- Stream movies and videos to iPhone and Android tablet (HP Touchpad running CyanogenMod 9)
- Integrates with iTunes so that my 120GB music database can be played anywhere
- iTunes playlists on home PC are seen with Plex client so I can easily stream music while driving (no more Pandora, Spotify, etc.)
- Plex client login allows you to see all of your libraries automatically, no matter what device you are using
- Plex app for Roku so that I can stream home videos, movies, music to TVs. You can take this little box with you on vacation, hook it to a TV, connect via integrated WiFi and have access to all of your multimedia just as if you were home as well as NetFlix and other apps.
- Integrated database populates the metadata for music and movies instantly. No need to use a metadata manager.
- TV Show series look great and contain all of the info about each episode.
- The quality of the videos can be adjusted automatically or manually based on your connection speed so you can stream over 3G or slow WiFi connections.
- DLNA support in latest beta.
- You can share your libraries with other Plex friends.

- Kindle Fire performance is poor. You can make some changes to the Plex settings to improve quality. I got my son's to work pretty well. Search the Plex forum for "kindle fire" to get info on this.
- No social network integration
- You really need to be on a 192.168.x.x network for stuff to work correctly. This was an issue for me but I bit the bullet and moved everything over.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Current Version in play store March 13, 2014

Please update the app to the same version in the Google Play Store. The app in the play store currently supports chromecast streaming and this old version does not. 5 stars once you update the app to the current version. The version in the Google Play Store is 3.28.109 and this is the current version with Chromecast support.

4.0 out of 5 stars Needs a fast processor? May 23, 2011
Verified Purchase
This is a great implementation, but I find the video performance to be lacklustre on my Optimus T. This only has a 600mhz processor so I suspect a 1Ghz processor or above really gets the best out of this. I tried the 'lower color, more speed' option but it didn't do great. I still need to get some time to optimize it.

I'd love to see an addition where the plex app on the phone can act as a remote for Plex on the TV.

The only app I've actually paid for so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great before! Mind-Blowing After Update!! April 29, 2011
The Plex devs are an incredible team and continue to amaze me. I've been an avid Plex user for the last few years and in the past year they have come a long way. They seem to innovate day in and day out. I own the plex app for my iPod, iPad, and my HTC Evo. All work flawlessly!

The Android app works better than ever after the most recent update and has also been given a huge face lift. It's gorgeous to look at. Now I use my phone as a full time remote and media browser. It's awesome to be able to control the media center from my phone. A huge thank you to the devs!

I'm not sure if this is an Amazon issue, or a Plex issue, but the version here on Amazon has not been updated while new versions are being released on Google Play. The missing updates contain fixes for ChromeCast and newer versions of Android. It's also interesting that it has been on sale here on Amazon for a while, but not on Google Play. You might want to consider avoiding the Amazon version until it becomes clear what's happening here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Media Server App November 10, 2013
Verified Purchase
Plex is an outstanding solution for people looking to host their own media server with access available to other networked devices in their homes. I use it to stream movies to smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles. This app allows me to do the same with my Kindle Fire HD 7". There are a few things to note about using the Plex media server, however.

1 - your server needs to be powerful enough to handle the streaming load, ie to transfer the video and convert it on the fly to a media type your devices can handle. A lot of people complaining about Plex don't realize that streaming/converting a large .mkv file on the fly to devices that support .mp4 playback is intensive for most machines. I run an i7 with 8 gbs of ram and it can get bogged down if I'm streaming to more than 1 device. I spend time converting all my files to HD .mp4 android standard. This makes streaming a breeze to multiple sources at the same time.
2 - your network needs to be stable and fast...If you plex server is connected via wifi, you will likely experience delays in streaming when converting formats. I run a gigabit wireless router and, again, can experience hicccups. When I connect the server directly (rj-45) rather than via wifi, the hiccups disappear.

If you take care of these two things, I think many will find that the Plex services improve exponentially. As for this app, the Kindle store version is good, but not as up to date as the Google Play version. For example, I have purchased a new Kindle HDX 8.9" and it's still not compatible with this app on the Kindle app store. However, I know the Plex app is fine on large tablets because I run the same version on my older Asus Transformer. It's this kind of inconsistency that bogs down the Kindle app store.

I noticed the app is a couple releases out of date...
It is actually now 4 releases out-of-date, as compared to the version that is available on Google Play. I don't know if this is an Amazon problem, or a Plex problem, but I have not been able to get any meaningful response in the Plex forums.

Update: The response I finally got is that it is... Read more
