Plextor PX-MS Series
Super Fast Performance

PX-M2 solid state drives support the SATA 6Gb/s interface, to read and transfer large amount of data quickly in the shortest time possible. These drives use the Marvell 88SS9174 controller chip--currently the industry's most advanced control chip--which helps boost read and write performance.

Stable and Durable

The unique Instant Restore Function keeps data transfer rate performance like new despite being in a "dirty state", which overcomes the problem of slower performance after a prolonged usage. PX-M2 drives support Microsoft's TRIM command to overcome the common SSD problem of slower data processing times after long-term usage by wiping out data in the most efficient method.

Long Life

PX-M2 solid state drives boast a 128MB DDR3 cache buffer which helps stabilize the SSD and reduces the seek/read/write time of flash memory resulting in a quicker transfer rate. This also reduces the possibility of frequently-modified data entering the flash memory system, which prolongs the drive's lifespan. Built-in Dynamic Wear Leveling technology uses the most efficient data allocation method to write data into various memory blocks equally. This reduces the number of memory wipe-outs and also increases the SSD's lifespan.

Bundled Software

Acronis True Image provides disk cloning and backup utilities which provide an instant solution for replacing your system's existing hard disk drive and creating ongoing backups of your new SSD.

What's in the Box

Plextor PX-M2 Series solid state drive, Acronis True Image software, Quick Install guide, user's manual, warranty card.

I bought this SSD because it seemed to be one of the more stable of the faster SSD's available as of August 2011. There are several out now that have higher read/write speeds and that are not much more expensive than this SSD, but when you read the reviews, blue screens and unresolved problems are frequent. Many manufacturers don't yet have the firmware to stabilize their SSD's. I"m installing this one in my work computer rather than a gaming machine and need stability as much as speed.

The instructions that come with this SSD are inadequate.

The firmware on the SSD should be updated "before" an operating system is installed on the drive. The instructions on how to update the firmware can be found in the support section of the Plextor site rather than the instructions in the box. Unfortunately, it looks like any future firmware updates will require me to wipe the SSD, install the new firmware and then reinstall all of my software and data on the SSD. Not happy about this process, but that's the cost of using leading edge technology SSD's right now. Also, it is important to immediately update all of your other computer drivers and firmware after installing an operating system.

For this drive, I installed it on my computer, formatted the SSD, downloaded the new Plextor firmware and then updated the SSD before installing a new operating system, software and data. I've used it for two weeks now under a variety of loads and conditions and have had no problems whatsoever.

The speed is a delight. I've spent too much of my life waiting on phone calls, fax machines, copy machines and computers to boot up or respond after mouse clicks. This SSD gave the computer enough of a speed boost that most of my wait time on the computer is gone now.

This is my 5th SSD. I own 4 Kingstons SSD's. But, I found that Plextor is faster and more reliable (compatible with Windows 7, CentOS and Ubuntu)
If you are looking for a larger (256GB+) SSD, Plextor is a good choice. I had problem with my Kingston SSD's. Some of the backup programs even couldn't recognize the drive!!

If you plan to buy a new SSD, make sure it's fully compatible with your OS!

I purchased a Samsung 256GB SSD , 3Gbps interface, and this Plextor, and have used both for several months. Both worked fine in my HP Envy 17 3D after purchase of the drive caddy for the second drive location. I tried to use the bundled software to clone my existing drive to the SSD via exterior cable, then swapped in the SSDs. I grew impatient with the overly complicated bundled software, and had recently used and gained a little experience with Apricorn EZ Gig 3 with USB to SATA cable, so just used that and got it done in a few mouse clicks. The Plextor is faster than the Samsung, uses the latest and greatest Marvell controller for the same price, so that choice was a no-brainer.

My Plextor SSD failed on 2013 Nov, and the Samsung SSD and magnetic disk drives continue to work properly. So much for buying SSD for better reliability.

WOW! I had a typically slow 5400 RPM Western Digital drive that was the slowest component of my computer setup....by far! So I got this drive and now I can boot Windows 7 Professional and all startup programs in about 7 to 10 secs. On top of that, I no longer hear the "grinding" typical of the old-style hard drives.

For the price, what they give you in the box is a little sad. SATA III cable? No. Adapter to mount in a 3.5" bay? Sorry. You essentially just get the drive. When I went to install, I realized that a friend had my OS disks, and I was crushed. But then I discovered that the bundled software with the drives included a program that can "clone" your old hard drive, so I initially used that to get going. It worked....mostly. Avast and a few other programs died. Then I got the Windows 7 Install disk back and a new SATA III cable and all is well.

For the bundled software, there is one disk that is unmarked - like your friend burned it for you. I think that's also a bit weird given the price point...but what the heck; the drive works wonders. Hoping to get a second one!

Anyone looking to really step up the speed of their computer - this is well worth it. I'm running mac OS X lion. the operating system is designed to save your place and open as you shut it down. having this hard drive in my computer makes this feature work the way it was meant to! Plus this drive is silent. I actually noticed this right away - no hard drive clicking away in my computer anymore. Just silent speedy operation.
